Pac-10 Week 6 Wrap-Up

William BoorOct 11, 2009

Week 6 continued to show that anything can happen in this conference. Everything went according to plan in three out of the four games. The exception came in Corvallis, Oregon where the Beavers showed that Stanford is not quite ready to a Pac-10 title contender. This week’s games were:

13 Oregon @ UCLA: Considering that the Oregon Ducks had scored ninety six points over the past two weeks, there were probably plenty of people that were surprised to see that the Bruins held the Ducks scoreless over the first half of football. This did not last very long however, as the Ducks returned the second half kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. On UCLA’s first play from scrimmage in the second half, quarterback Kevin Prince threw an interception that was returned 32 yards for a touchdown. 26 seconds into the half and the Ducks had 14 points. Oregon tacked on 10 more for a 24-10 victory over the Bruins. The Ducks will have a week off before going to Seattle to take on the Huskies. Hopefully, Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli can use the bye week to get healthy as the Oregon offense was not the same without him.

Arizona State @ Washington State: Usually if you lose the turnover battle by 3, you do not win the game. However, ASU stole a game this weekend and was lucky to pull out a win. Danny Sullivan threw three interceptions. Freshman backup Brock Osweiler saw limited action in the first half. ASU only won this game because of their defense which ranks first in the Pac-10 allowing just 232 yards per game.

Stanford @ Oregon State: Too little too late. Stanford won the second half 21-7, but they lost the game 38-28. People were anticipating the running game to come from Toby Gerhart and the Stanford Cardinal, but it was Jacquizz Rodgers who decided to put on a show. After four straight weeks of being held under 100 yards, Jacquizz rushed for 189 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Beavers to an upset victory at home.

Arizona @ Washington: This game flew under the radar, but it turned out to be very exciting. Washington was down by 12 late in the 4th quarter, but after an unnecessary roughness penalty against Arizona, Jake Locker threw a touchdown pass to bring the Huskies within 5. On the ensuing possession Nick Foles threw an interception that the Huskies returned for a touchdown. Locker completed the pass for the two point conversion giving the Huskies a 36-33 lead with just over two minutes to go. The Wildcats drove down the field, but Nick Foles threw an interception on 4th down. The Huskies held on for the win, stealing a game that should have been won by the Wildcats of Arizona.
