WWE WrestleMania 2017: Biggest Missed Opportunities with Show's Booking

Aaron BowerApr 4, 2017

WWE WrestleMania 33 is in the bag, and while the Ultimate Thrill Ride gave fans plenty of memorable moments, it's impossible to ignore some real missed opportunities from a booking perspective.

There were huge victories for some of the company's biggest up-and-coming stars, but it feels like a case of what could have been for some.

Whether it's the wrong result, the wrong booking or just a missed step from the WWE, there's a host of missed opportunities the company may look back on and regret. Here's a selection of the biggest.

Sasha Banks Being Eliminated Early

Most WWE fans expected Sasha Banks and Bayley to close the Raw Women's Championship match on Sunday night at WrestleMania.

That way, it would have been the perfect platform for those two to start a feud, potentially with Banks turning heel in the process.

But when Banks was eliminated before Charlotte Flair, leaving the former champion and Bayley to battle to a finish, it felt like a missed step.

The flow of the match suffered, as did its momentum. Prior to that, fans were clearly invested in the bout, but when Banks left, it created an obvious ending.

Bayley vs. Banks could have seen either woman realistically prevail. Charlotte was never going to win the title on Sunday night.

Building Bray Wyatt's Momentum as Champion

Tuesday's episode of SmackDown will give further details as to whether Bray Wyatt remains in the WWE Championship picture following defeat to Randy Orton at WrestleMania. But there's no doubting that the result was a major setback for Bray and perhaps one of the biggest missed opportunities of the whole show.

This was a chance for the WWE to solidify Wyatt's arrival as a talent to be reckoned with on SmackDown. Having him go over Orton would have given him some much-needed credibility as champion, but instead, his winless run at Mania continued.

So what now? Backlash will probably provide Bray with an instant opportunity to get the title back, and there's every possibility he could wrestle back the WWE Championship in the coming weeks and months.

But this was an opportunity to give Wyatt's career a real boost, and unfortunately, the WWE missed a trick.

Roman Reigns Not Turning Heel

Perhaps the biggest missed opportunity in the WWE's recent history, let alone WrestleMania 33?

The platform was there for Roman Reigns to turn heel on Sunday night. The Undertaker was always going to go out on his back, that much was a given.

But with Reigns a lock to win the match, he could have done it in such a way that would have solidified him as the WWE's next big heel.

The vitriolic reactions he received on Monday's Raw may have perhaps sent the loudest message yet to WWE officials about their displeasure at Reigns' current booking.

It looks like he's never going to be over as a babyface before turning heel, so the WWE would be wise to pull the trigger sooner rather than later.

This was a great chance to do that. But the company missed a beat in a major way.
