Tom Brady Given Stolen Super Bowl Jerseys by Patriots Owner Robert Kraft
After nearly two months apart, Tom Brady has been reunited with his Super Bowl LI jersey.
New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft presented Brady with the jersey, which was recovered last month, in a video provided by the team Monday:
Kraft also presented Brady his Super Bowl XLIX jersey, which had been missing for more than two years.
Martin Mauricio Ortega was identified by Mexican media as the person who stole Brady's jerseys. Ortega was an international media member serving as the director of Mexican publication La Prensa and allegedly took the jerseys from the locker room, per Darren Rovell and Mike Reiss of ESPN.com.
The helmet of Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller, worn in Super Bowl 50, was also recovered by investigators.
"I am happy my jerseys from SB 49 and SB 51 have been recovered, and I want to thank all of the law enforcement agencies involved. I know they worked hard on this case—and it is very much appreciated. Hopefully when I get the jerseys back I can make something very positive come from this experience," Brady said in a statement released by his agent, Don Yee.
The FBI worked in conjunction with the NFL, Patriots security and other law enforcement agencies to investigate the thefts.
Brady's Super Bowl LI jersey took on special meaning given the adversity the team fought through to defeat the Atlanta Falcons. The Patriots trailed 28-3 with 17 minutes remaining in the game, but Brady engineered a comeback in regulation to force overtime. New England scored on its first possession of overtime to earn a 34-28 win, marking by far the largest comeback in Super Bowl history.
It was Brady's record fifth Super Bowl win and his first since the Deflategate scandal, which led to his being suspended four games in the 2016 season.
