The Sunday Morning BCS Report: Week Six

Dan SmithOct 11, 2009

The greatest flaw in the BCS Regular Season Playoff System is the fluidity of the system itself. This was a normal week in college football, another top five team did lose but it was against the number one ranked team.

The biggest story lines were the return of two fallen stars.

Tim Tebow didn't even miss a game. (Ace Ventura intake of air) He was knocked out of the Kentucky game then there was a two week national crush of attention as he recovered from the concussion that knocked him out of the Kentucky game and he played above average against LSU in a win.

Florida is still the best team in the country.

The debate on who (or whom?) is No. 2 is far from stinky. I had USC at two to (tu-tu?) start the season but their loss to Washington dropped them to No. 4 for me. I put Texas at two seeing that they were my third ranked team.

Perhaps a flaw in using a pre-season poll since Alabama is looking so solid right now. Of course, Florida and Alabama will meet in the SEC Title Game and it will be so late in the season that the loser will be knocked out of the national title race so that means one of the best teams in the country has no chance to win the national title.

I will break down the BCS but I will never like the BCS for reasons like the above paragraph.

Here is another flaw in the BCS that I want to break down.

Oklahoma has their quarterback back as Sam Bradford threw 49 times in a win against Baylor. During Bradford's injury, Bob Stoops had Landry Jones as his starting QB and the Sooners lost two games by one point to two good teams in BYU and Miami. Those two losses, essentially, end their national title hopes. Even if they beat Colt McCoy and Texas next week, win the rest of their games and the Big XII Title Game they will get no higher than No.4.

And here is why...

The winner of the Alabama/Florida game will be the No. 1 team in the country at the end of the season. Boise State will not lose the rest of the year and their win over Oregon looks better and better as the Ducks keep winning. Boise State is not the second best team in the country but they are a flaw in the BCS and might be the biggest BCS buster to date. The winner of the Oregon/USC game will be the third rated team in the country as I see it. That doesn't even mention Virginia Tech or Texas (even if they lose to OU).

Of course, OU could lose next week and make the whole debate moot. No three loss team will ever win the national title unless there is a 16-team tournament and a 15- or 16-seeded team wins four straight games to shock the world.

Wouldn't that be fun in December? It would be like having Christmas every Saturday.

My Top Two:

1. Florida

2. Texas

Conference Power Rankings:

1. SEC

2. Big XII

3. Pac-10

4. Big 10

5. Mountain West

6. ACC

Week Seven Preview (in list form):

1. Texas vs. Oklahoma

2. USC at Notre Dame

3. Alabama at South Carolina

4. Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech

One last thought...

Kudos are due to Bob Stoops and Urban Meyer with how they dealt with their fallen superstars. Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow both have promising futures in the NFL. Stoops and Meyer guided rough waters and have their teams looking strong while the stock of the fallen QB's can only grow through their own play.
