Redskins Won't Hire Scot McCloughan GM Replacement Until After 2017 NFL Draft

Joseph ZuckerMar 26, 2017

The Washington Redskins plan on waiting until after the draft to hire a general manager, CSN Mid-Atlantic's JP Finlay reported Sunday.

The team fired former GM Scot McCloughan March 9.

Washington arguably made a big enough mistake when it let go of a general manager with a little less than two months left before the NFL draft. And as CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora argued, it jettisoned a shrewd evaluator:

Washington will have already begun formulating a draft plan prior to McCloughan's departure and may not deviate too much from that with him gone.

Should Washington begin looking for a new general manager now, the interview and hiring process would likely leave the GM with only a few weeks to discuss their ideas with the team's scouts and front office.

Especially considering Washington has 10 total picks, going into the draft with an agreed-upon strategy will be even more important for the team. Scrambling to hire McCloughan's successor before the draft gets underway April 27 would almost certainly prevent that from happening.
