Rich McKay, Falcons Agree to Contract Extension Through 2022

Tim DanielsMar 21, 2017

The Atlanta Falcons and team president Rich McKay reached an agreement Tuesday on a five-year contract extension to keep him with the organization until June 2022.

The Falcons announced the news on their official website and included a statement from AMB Group chief executive officer Steve Cannon:

"

Rich has been so important to our businesses and Atlanta's growth for many years. We are thrilled to extend his contract with the Falcons and AMB Sports & Entertainment. He has been instrumental in the success of the Atlanta Falcons on and off the field and has played a very important role in making Mercedes-Benz Stadium a reality, and in bringing Major League Soccer to Atlanta. Rich is a great champion of our core values and will continue to be a strong leader in our organization and community for years to come.

McKay has served as the general manager of both the Falcons and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He moved into his current role of president after the franchise hired Thomas Dimitroff as its GM in 2008, a position Dimitroff continues to fill.

The Falcons president played a key role in development plans for Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the team's new home field that's scheduled to open for the 2017 season.

In addition to his role with Atlanta, McKay is the chairman of the NFL's competition committee. The group reviews proposals and makes recommendations about potential rule changes for the league.

His extension comes after Atlanta captured the NFC championship in 2016 before losing to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI in Houston.
