NCAA Tournament 2017: Friday's 1st-Round Scores, Updated Bracket and Schedule

Scott PolacekMar 17, 2017

The favorites largely took care of business Thursday in the first round of the NCAA tournament, minimizing the madness portion of March Madness.

However, Friday presented an entire slate of new games for Cinderellas to emerge and title favorites to flex their muscles. Many of the sport's blue bloods such as North Carolina, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas and UCLA also started their tournaments Friday.

With that in mind, here is a look at the complete schedule and an updated bracket. The scores will be updated throughout the day of competition.

Friday's Results

No. 7 Michigan Beats No. 10 Oklahoma State, 92-91

If he wasn't a household name already, Michigan's Derrick Walton Jr. will be soon if he continues playing like he did Friday in a 92-91 victory over Oklahoma State.

The Wolverines' senior leader put the team on his back and stuffed the stat sheet with 26 points, 11 assists, five rebounds and two steals, shooting 6-of-9 from three-point range. He also drilled two clutch free throws with 10 seconds left to extend his team's lead to four points.

Michigan as a team shot a blistering 16-of-29 (55.2 percent) from deep and had too much firepower for Oklahoma State's outmatched defense. Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports noted the high score wasn't much of a surprise:

The Cowboys stayed within striking distance in the shootout thanks to 23 points and 12 assists from Jawun Evans but couldn't contain Walton, D.J. Wilson (19 points), Zak Irvin (16 points) and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman (16 points).

No. 3 Baylor Beats No. 14 New Mexico State, 91-73

The New Mexico State Aggies appeared primed to seize the role of Cinderella with a 40-38 halftime lead, but the Baylor Bears dominated the second half on the way to a straightforward 91-73 win.

Baylor's superior size proved critical, as it outrebounded the Aggies 39-27. Five Bears scored in double figures, including Al Freeman who led the team with 21 points. Johnathan Motley notched a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards.

Ian Baker and Braxton Huggins each scored 19 points in defeat for New Mexico State.

No. 8 Arkansas Beats No. 9 Seton Hall, 77-71

The Arkansas Razorbacks outlasted the Seton Hall Pirates 77-71 in a thrilling game that came down to the final seconds.

Seton Hall had the ball trailing by one with less than 30 seconds remaining, but Khadeen Carrington traveled. From there, the Pirates' Desi Rodriguez committed a flagrant foul, and Arkansas iced the game on the free-throw line and with another defensive stop.

Seton Hall finished with 15 turnovers, and Sam Vecenie of Sporting News thought it was a fitting end to the game:

Despite his critical turnover, Carrington scored a team-high 22 points. Moses Kingsley led the way for Arkansas with 23 points and six rebounds on 10-of-13 shooting from the field.

No. 3 Oregon Beats No. 14 Iona, 93-77

The Oregon Ducks are playing without Chris Boucher after he suffered a season-ending ACL tear, but they still looked like Final Four contenders Friday in a commanding 93-77 victory over Iona.

The game was never truly in doubt after the Ducks created separation in the first half even though Iona outscored them in the second half by two. Tyler Dorsey scored a team-high 24 points for Oregon, while star Dillon Brooks added 18 points and Jordan Bell notched a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Iona drilled 10 three-pointers and received 22 points and 11 boards from Jordan Washington, but it couldn't contain Oregon's formidable offense.

No. 2 Louisville Beats No. 15 Jacksonville State, 78-63

Jacksonville State remained within striking distance for much of the game and pulled within single digits in the middle of the second half but ultimately didn't have enough talent to handle Louisville.

The Cardinals controlled the boards and outrebounded the Gamecocks 36-23 on the way to a 78-63 win. That helped them keep Jacksonville State at bay even though the Gamecocks shot 10-of-19 from three-point range.

Mangok Mathiang led Louisville with 18 points, while Quentin Snider and Deng Adel each added 16. Norbertas Giga spearheaded Jacksonville State's attack with 30 points and nine rebounds.

No. 11 USC Beats No. 6 SMU, 66-65

The USC Trojans survived a thriller against the SMU Mustangs 66-65.

USC's Elijah Stewart drilled a corner three in the final minute to put USC ahead by one, but SMU's Ben Moore could have given his team the lead on the free-throw line. Instead, he missed the front end of a one-and-one, but the Mustangs had one more chance after Chimezie Metu missed a free throw.

That's when Shake Milton's buzzer beater came up short, clinching the win for the Trojans.

ESPN Stats & Info put the game into historical context:

Despite the loss, Semi Ojeleye notched a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Stewart finished with a team-high 22 points for the Trojans.

No. 1 North Carolina Beats No. 16 Texas Southern, 103-64

The North Carolina Tar Heels looked like national title contenders Friday and eviscerated the Texas Southern Tigers 103-64.

Six different Tar Heels scored in double figures, and Justin Jackson led the way with 21 points and seven rebounds. North Carolina also dominated on the boards and outrebounded the Tigers 54-27.

Kevin Scott finished with a team-high 19 points for Texas Southern.

No. 11 Rhode Island Beats No. 6 Creighton, 84-72

The Rhode Island Rams haven't lost since Feb. 15 and continued their hot streak with an impressive 84-72 victory over the Creighton Bluejays at Golden 1 Center on Friday.

All five Rhode Island starters scored in double figures, led by Jeff Dowtin's 23 points. The Rams also shot a blistering 28-of-31 from the free-throw line, which prevented the Bluejays from making any late comebacks.

Ronnie Harrell Jr. and Marcus Foster each scored 15 points in defeat for Creighton.

No. 1 Kansas Beats No. 16 UC Davis, 100-62

The Kansas Jayhawks had no issues with the UC Davis Aggies on Friday and steamrolled their way to a 100-62 victory.

All five Jayhawks starters scored in double figures, and Frank Mason III led the way with 22 points and eight assists on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. Landen Lucas added a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards.

While the Aggies shot just 33.9 percent from the field, Chima Moneke was solid with 20 points and nine rebounds.

No. 2 Duke Beats No. 15 Troy, 87-65

The Duke Blue Devils kept the Troy Trojans at bay for the majority of Friday's game thanks to the combination of Jayson Tatum, Grayson Allen, Matt Jones and Frank Jackson. The foursome combined for 67 points in the 87-65 victory.

The Blue Devils drilled 13 three-pointers and used their strong perimeter defense to limit Troy to 5-of-23 shooting from deep on the other end.

Troy's Jordon Varnado held his own against the mighty Blue Devils with 18 points and 10 boards in defeat.

No. 10 Wichita State Beats No. 7 Dayton, 64-58

The Wichita State Shockers have lost just four games all season and took the first step toward playing the role of double-digit seed bracket-buster Friday with a 64-58 victory over the Dayton Flyers.

Wichita State outrebounded Dayton 48-29, which helped it overcome 16 turnovers.

Landry Shamet led the way for the Shockers with 13 points, while Scoochie Smith poured in 25 points for the Flyers.

No. 6 Cincinnati Beats No. 11 Kansas State, 75-61

The Cincinnati Bearcats were never truly challenged against the Kansas State Wildcats and cruised to a 75-61 victory.

The Bearcats' stifling defense dictated the tempo throughout the game, and their offense was efficient, shooting 62.8 percent from the field. Troy Caupain led the way for Cincinnati with 23 points and seven rebounds, while Kyle Washington added 16 points.

Wesley Iwundu was the only Kansas State player to score in double figures, and he ended with 19 points.

No. 9 Michigan State Beats No. 8 Miami, 78-58

After falling behind 10-0 in the first three minutes, the Michigan State Spartans steamrolled the Miami Hurricanes for an easy 78-58 victory.

The Spartans trailed by as many as 12 points early before closing the first half on a 25-6 run that gave them an 11-point advantage. Eight players scored in the game for Michigan State, led by Nick Ward's 19 points.

ESPN Stats & Info also pointed out the Spartans' young roster set a new school record in the win:

Miami didn't shoot the ball well against Michigan State's defense, connecting on just 40.4 percent of its attempts. Ja'Quan Newton did have 16 points in his highest-scoring game since February 8.

No. 7 South Carolina Beats No. 10 Marquette, 93-73

The South Carolina Gamecocks rode a 51-point second half to a 93-73 victory over the Marquette Golden Eagles. The win marked South Carolina's first in the NCAA tournament since 1973.

South Carolina was led by a dazzling performance from SEC Player of the Year Sindarius Thornwell, who finished with a double-double of 29 points and 11 rebounds.

The Gamecocks' always-stellar defense showed up in a big way, forcing Marquette into 18 turnovers and limiting the Golden Eagles to just 3-of-12 shooting from three-point range in the second half.

In his final game at Marquette, Jajuan Johnson led the team with 16 points and six rebounds off the bench.

No. 3 UCLA Beats No. 14 Kent State, 97-80

The UCLA Bruins were able to survive a difficult test from the Kent State Golden Flashes 97-80 to advance to the round of 32 on Sunday.

Kent State closed the gap to within four points at 54-50 less than four minutes into the second half. The Bruins went on a 34-18 run over the next 12 minutes to put the game away.

UCLA had an incredible shooting performance, connecting on 62.7 percent of its attempts and had 25 assists on 37 field goals. Five Bruins scored in double figures, led by T.J. Leaf's 23.

In defeat, Kent State's Jimmy Hall was terrific with 20 points and 15 rebounds.

No. 2 Kentucky Beats No. 15 Northern Kentucky, 79-70

In a final score that looks closer than the game really was, the Kentucky Wildcats prevailed over the Northern Kentucky Norse 79-70.

Kentucky was up by 17 points with less than 10 minutes remaining in the second half. The Wildcats did start to take their foot off the gas pedal down the stretch to let Northern Kentucky finish within single digits.

This wasn't a vintage performance from Kentucky, which shot 44.3 percent overall and went 3-of-17 from three-point range. Edrice Adebayo was the standout performer with 15 points and 18 rebounds in the win.

Northern Kentucky's Lavone Holland II finished with a game-high 22 points.
