Arnold Palmer Invitational 2017: Thursday Leaderboard Scores and Highlights

Rob GoldbergMar 16, 2017

Emiliano Grillo and Matthew Fitzpatrick each earned a share of the early lead at the Arnold Palmer Invitational with at five strokes under par.

The two young golfers started on different tees and had very different days, but each finished with a 67 to take the lead after Round 1.

Lucas Glover, Paul Casey and Charley Hoffman all sit one stroke back after carding 68s in the opening round.

Here is a look at the latest leaderboard from Orlando:

Grillo had to play in cold morning weather, but that didn't stop him from scoring seven birdies, including a stretch of four in five holes on the front nine.

"If I had my hands out of my pockets for a minute or two, I would be freezing," he said after the round, per Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press. "But I was able to keep it in the fairway mostly all day and I was able to make a few good putts on 9 and 17, and that kept me going."

This was good enough to keep the lead for the majority of the day.

However, Fitzpatrick came through in the afternoon to earn a share of the lead at five-under. The 22-year-old had a much simpler round, avoiding bogeys and earning five birdies in a nearly flawless performance.

Jason Day was another one of the early starters who braved the cold to end up with a 70. He also said he "has the back of a 70-year-old" and was stiff, via Michael Collins of ESPN.

If he can loosen up, the No. 2 player in the world has plenty of time to climb up the leaderboard.

Another big story Thursday was the play of Sam Saunders, Arnold Palmer's grandson, playing on Palmer's course. Jason Sobel of ESPN discussed the early performance:

He tailed off down the stretch, but almost had a miracle shot on a par three, via Golf Channel:

He has missed four of six cuts this year but got off to a hot start at two-under through 12 holes. The problem is he finished plus-four from there, including two bogeys and then a double-bogey on No. 18. The hope is he will find some of his early round confidence going into Friday.

Keegan Bradley is one of the bigger names within striking distance. He was up and down but finished with a 71, thanks in part to this effort on No. 2:

He goes into Round 2 in a tie for 20th along with Justin Rose, Kevin Na and others.

Rory McIlroy also had a wild round but had one of the best single shots of the day, via PGA Tour:

He finished two strokes over par in a day that included four bogeys and a double bogey.

A lot can happen with three rounds left and not a lot of separation at the top. Considering the talented players lurking just off the leaderboard, there can be a lot of changes in the coming days.
