Chelsea Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Romelu Lukaku and Alvaro Morata

Christopher SimpsonMar 16, 2017

Chelsea are reportedly targeting both Romelu Lukaku and Alvaro Morata to replace Diego Costa this summer.

According to The Sun's Anthony Chapman, the Blues are prepared to sell Costa "for a huge fee" and want to bring in the Everton and Real Madrid strikers to facilitate a move to a 3-5-2 formation, which manager Antonio Conte employed at Juventus.

Per the Daily Mail's Dominic King, Lukaku has said he will not sign a new deal at Everton and has ambitions of moving to a bigger club.

Meanwhile, Morata has largely been restricted to a back-up role at the Santiago Bernabeu following his return in the summer.

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo (L, #7) embraces Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata after Ronaldo is substituted following his third goal in the match to make the final score 4-2 during the Club World Cup football final match between Kashima Antlers

The pair have both had impressive campaigns—here's a look at their respective numbers:

Lukaku played for Chelsea earlier in his career, but he was given just 15 senior appearances to prove himself—a number of which were off the bench—and did not manage to score for the Blues before moving to the Toffees, initially on loan in 2013 before making the deal permanent the following year.

The Belgian idolises Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, though:

The 23-year-old shares many attributes with the Stamford Bridge legend, not least of all his power and eye for goal.

Indeed, Lukaku already boasts an impressive goalscoring record despite his age, per Squawka Football:

Morata's is far more modest, having netted a total of 71 goals for Juventus, Real Madrid, Real Madrid Castilla and Spain, though it's worth noting that 33 of them have come in the UEFA Champions League, including one in the 2015 final against Barcelona.

Per J.L. Guerrero of AS, his minutes-per-goal ratio (104) this season is better than Cristiano Ronaldo's (119), Karim Benzema's (149) and Gareth Bale's (173), so while he may not be as prolific as Lukaku, he's a potent player in the final third.

The pair would be tremendous additions to the Blues squad, and as excellent a player as Costa is, it would be worth letting him go if it would help fund bringing both players in.
