Indiana's OG Anunoby Reportedly Will Enter 2017 NBA Draft and Sign with an Agent
Indiana Hoosiers forward OG Anunoby missed a significant chunk of his sophomore season due to a knee injury, but that won't stop him from making a leap to the NBA.
According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports and Jeff Goodman of ESPN, Anunoby will declare for the 2017 draft. He will hire an agent, making him ineligible to return to Indiana.
Anunoby was merely a supplementary contributor during his freshman season, averaging 4.9 points and 2.6 rebounds in 13.7 minutes per game. But from the start of his sophomore campaign, it was evident Anunoby was ready for a larger role.
Before his year was cut short, he averaged 11.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.3 blocks while shooting 55.7 percent from the field.
Beyond the raw numbers, the 6'8", 235-pounder flashed above-the-rim athleticism:
However, questions lingered about his polish.
Although Anunoby proved to be a freakish athlete, the mechanics on his handle and jump shot remained a work in progress.
"He's a teaser and tricky," an NBA executive told Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman. "He'd have to go to a team who can be patient, and being in the lottery, patience is tough these days. OG is a question mark for me, as team needs would be a difference-maker."
Similarly, one NBA scout told Wasserman that Anunoby still needs to make big strides: "He's a freak, but he's not a basketball player yet."
Despite those criticisms, ESPN's Chad Ford has Anunoby ranked as the No. 15 overall player in the 2017 draft.
Anunoby should be viewed as a combo-forward who can earn his money on the defensive end by using plus-lateral quickness and length. He should be able to guard smaller ball-handlers and more physically imposing wings.
