Norwegian Hockey Playoff Game Goes into Record 8 Overtimes
The Storhamar Dragons and Sparta Warriors are believed to have made hockey history Monday.
The two Norwegian hockey teams played into eight overtimes during a playoff game, won 2-1 by the Dragons, which is the longest hockey game on record, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com).
The game didn't wrap up until over eight-and-a-half hours after it began, and game action totaled 217 minutes, 14 seconds. NHL Network's Jamie Hersch put that into perspective:
Joakim Jensen scored the winning goal to give the Dragons a 3-2 lead in the quarterfinals for the Get-ligaen playoffs. Erik de la Rose got Storhamar on the board with a goal in the second period before Henrik Knold tied the game at the 2:20 mark of the third period.
The record for longest game in the NHL has stood since 1936, when the Detroit Red Wings needed six overtimes to defeat the Montreal Maroons, 1-0, in the first game of the Stanley Cup semifinal. The Red Wings swept the series 3-0 en route to their first Stanley Cup.
