Adam WellsMar 11, 2017

With just 18 holes at the 2017 Valspar Championship left to play, Adam Hadwin holds a four-shot lead with a three-round score of 14-under par.

Hadwin started the day alone in first place and continued to extend his lead thanks to a 67. He's got a sizable edge over Patrick Cantlay, who jumped into second place with a 66 that put his score at 10-under.

Here's the full leaderboard after 54 holes from Copperhead Course in Florida:

With marquee names like Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth taking the week off, this year's Valspar Championship has opened an opportunity for under-the-radar players to build momentum for the upcoming Masters tournament in April.

Hadwin is still in search of his first win on the PGA Tour. He's been successful on various other tours throughout his career, including winning twice on the Web.com Tour, but this is his best shot at breaking out on the biggest stage golf has to offer.

Golf Swagger did note Hadwin could join a club that has dominated the PGA Tour winner's circle this season:

Even with the entire final round to go, if Hadwin continues to putt like he did on No. 12 Saturday, he will have a lot to celebrate, via PGA Tour:

Hadwin was close to his first PGA Tour win in January, finishing second at the CareerBuilder Challenge after a memorable 59 in the third round. He closed that event with a 70 in the final round to finish one shot behind Hudson Swafford, but this is now his tournament to lose.

Per the PGA Tour, Hadwin has been close to perfect since starting his sixth hole on Friday:

Cantlay put himself into contention with his second consecutive 66. There was a brief moment when he took the outright lead thanks to this birdie on No. 18, via PGA Tour:

Cantlay has had a tumultuous path to reaching this spot. He had back issues during his years as a top-ranked amateur that knocked him down, then last year his caddie and friend Chris Roth was killed in a hit-and-run car accident.

There was little doubt about Cantlay's talent dating back to his time in college at UCLA. His 60 at the Travelers Championship in 2011 was a PGA Tour record for an amateur player.

After getting his feet wet at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am last month, finishing three-under par in 48th place, Cantlay is operating at the height of his powers right now. He still has work to do to catch Hadwin, but this is a significant step in the right direction.

Russell Henley was one of the big disappointments on Saturday. He started the day as part of a tie for fourth place at seven-under par with a 64-71 in the first two rounds.

Things fell apart for Henley in the third round with a four-over 75, including five bogeys. He dropped into a seven-way tie for 18th. Putting had been a strength for the Georgia native prior to today's round, per Chris Chaney of Swing by Swing Clubhouse:

On Saturday, per PGATour.com, Henley cost himself 2.13 strokes with the putter. It was a disastrous showing that knocked him out of contention for a win, though he still has 18 holes to salvage something from the weekend.

The rest of the field is currently sitting in Hadwin's wake. His performance throughout the weekend indicates it will take a Herculean effort from someone like Cantlay or Jim Herman, who is in third at nine-under par, to prevent the Canadian from taking home the Valspar Championship title on Sunday.
