Horse Racing Betting Preview: Super Saturday Flemington Odds, Analysis
Melbourne's autumn racing carnival peaks with the running of both the Newmarket Handicap and the Australian Cup at Flemington on the day known as Super Saturday.
The Newmarket Handicap is one of Australia's great sprinting races, while the Australian Cup is a 2,000-meter test.
Both markets are fairly open with Spieth, who has been runner-up in Group 1 sprints at Flemington in his past two runs, the $3.50 favorite for the Newmarket, according to AustralianGambling.com.au.
The talented four-year-old hasn't had much luck in those two starts, and the majority of punters think he can break through for a deserved win at the elite level in this race.
The market expects that his main challenge will come from two three-year-olds, Extreme Choice ($5) and Star Turn ($6.50), while Illustrious Lad and Oakleigh Plate winner Shiedel are both in single figures.
Terravista, a multiple Group 1 winner whose most recent start saw him beat Spieth in the Black Caviar Lightning three weeks ago, is the value runner in the race at $12, while last year's upset winner, The Quarterback, is $26 to go back to back.
The Australian Cup market is headed by classy mare Jameka, who won last year's Caulfield Cup, and emerging star Humidor. Both those horses are $4 and are coming off runs in the Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield two weeks ago.
In fact, nine of the 11 runners in this race came through that event, which was won by Stratum Star, who is $6.50 in this race. The United States, who was third in that Caulfield race, is also $6.50, while former international galloper Exospheric is $8.50.
Jameka is a Group 1 winner at Flemington, in the Crown Oaks in 2015, while her last attempt at 2,000 meters at Flemington saw her run second behind top-class galloper Hartnell in last October's Turnbull Stakes.
There is also Group 1 racing at Rosehill in Sydney in the Coolmore Classic, where Omei Sword ($3.60) is set to confirm her status as a future star of the track. The three-year-old filly ran a huge race when first-up a few weeks back and is given a huge chance of claiming her first Group 1 race.
Outside of Omei Sword, it's a very open 19-horse fillies and mares race with Global Glamour at $8.50 and La Bella Diosa ($9.50) the other horses in single figures.
