Three Freshman To Watch
1. UCLA PG Lonzo Ball
The 6'6" point guard with the funky-yet-effective jumper (he shoots 55 percent from the field and 41.9 percent from three-point range) is averaging 14.8 points, 7.8 assists and 6.2 boards per game for a UCLA team that leads the nation in scoring.
Ball's most incredible feat, however, is playing 34.9 minutes per game despite running up and down the court leading UCLA's fast and energetic offense (the Bruins rank 15th in tempo, per the Ken Pomeroy College Basketball rankings). Simply put, he has incredible stamina for someone his age.
UCLA is 29-3 this year and will be one of the must-see teams to watch in the tournament.
2. Kentucky SG Malik Monk
Monk is the best pure scorer in the freshman class (and one of the best scorers in the country). He averaged 21.2 points per game this season, which led the SEC, and he also posted one of the most impressive (if not the most impressive) games of the season when he scored 47 against North Carolina in a 103-100 win.
Monk is also pretty consistent as well:
Until the season finale against Texas A&M, Monk had scored in double digits in every single game this season. For the year, he shot 46.3 percent from the field and 40.9 percent from deep.
Monk is the type of player who can put the team on his back in March and lead it to the Final Four (or even a national championship). However, Monk has a lot of help, most notably from freshman superstar guard De'Aaron Fox, so teams are going to have a lot of trouble stopping the Wildcats in the tournament.
3. Duke F Jayson Tatum
The 6'8" forward just played a great game in Duke's 81-77 ACC tournament quarterfinal win over Louisville, posting 25 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Playing great in big games has been commonplace for Tatum this year. He had 19 points, nine boards and five assists in an 86-78 win over UNC, and he scored 28 points along with eight boards in a 65-55 win over a stingy UVA defense.
Tatum, like Monk and Ball, has incredible talent for a player so young (he just turned 19):
He averages 16.5 points and 7.3 boards per game this season and will be a matchup nightmare for tourney teams.
