UK Open Darts 2017: Scores, Results, Reaction After Sunday

James DudkoMar 5, 2017

Peter Wright won his first televised major title in the PDC after beating Gerwyn Price 11-6 in the final of the 2017 UK Darts Open at the Butlins resort in Minehead, England, on Sunday.

Wright took the title and the £70,000 in prize money, but only after staving off a late comeback from Price, who trailed 7-3 before eventually reducing the gap to 8-6 and putting real pressure on Snakebite.

Wright also saw off Raymond van Barneveld in a memorable match in the last eight before beating Daryl Gurney on finals day. Meanwhile, Price made it past Ian White and Alan Norris to reach his first final.

Quarter-Finals

Ironically, Wright was the clearest winner during a quarter-final stage otherwise filled with nip-and-tuck matches. Snakebite was the only player in the last eight to win by two legs after he saw off Barney in style.

Wright's win was inspired by a phenomenal scoring average. Live Darts detailed the Scotsman's impressive numbers:

The preceding moments had been back-and-forth, with van Barneveld leading 3-2, then falling 6-4 behind. Barney then rallied to draw level at six legs apiece before moving in front at 8-7.

However, Wright struck back with a 13-darter helping him go 9-8 ahead. Snakebite then sealed a victory he gave high praise to afterwards, per PDC Darts:

Wright was then slated to meet Gurney in the last four after the latter had beaten Simon Whitlock 10-9 in the quarter-final. A proficiency hitting maximum proved key in helping Gurney upset Whitlock, according to Live Darts:

Earlier, Price pulled off an upset of his own when he beat White 10-9. Diamond White started fast and kept up a terrific scoring pace to stay in touch with Price:

White eventually went ahead 9-8, but Price hit tops to force a decider. The latter then produced a decisive 160 checkout as White appeared to crumble under the pressure.

Like White, Kim Huybrechts wasted match dart when leading 9-8 in his quarter-final against Norris. Huybrechts' miss prompted a 54 checkout from Norris, who took out tops before finally sealing a memorable win.

Semi-Finals

Norris twice missed on double-10 to waste the chance to make the final. His errant form at the oche let Price make it, though.

Welshman Price was relieved to progress after an admittedly scrappy match:

Snakebite's progress was more straightforward against Gurney. Consecutive maximums put Wright 2-1 ahead, then a checkout of 144 made it 4-1 in his favour at the first interval.

Wright kept on rolling and was solid on doubles as he led 7-3:

Snakebite soon stretched his lead to 9-3 by the time of the second break. However, this was the cue for Gurney to stage a mini rally.

He actually managed to push it to 9-5 thanks to a vital break of throw. Yet that was as close as Super Chin got when Wright answered back by hitting double-five to move onto the brink of the final.

Wright soon finished off the job with room to spare.

Final

Wright took out 110 and 104 to start the final in style and leave Price reeling. It was 4-1 at the first interval after Wright had taken down 87.

Two legs later, Snakebite led 6-2 after he broke throw and checked out on 57. Price had missed on tops to let Wright in.

It was 7-3 at the next interval after Price stayed in it thanks to hitting double-12. Live Darts showed how the Iceman couldn't quite keep up with Wright's scoring average:

A double-eight put Wright 8-3 ahead, but Price battled back to halve the deficit after finding double-10. The tension increased when Snakebite missed bull for a 144 checkout, letting Price take tops for a break of throw.

Buoyed by the rally, the Iceman started the next leg with a well-taken 180. Wright fired back with 140, but Price again found tops to reduce the gap further to 8-6.

Just when it looked like he might buckle, Wright steeled his nerves to help take out double-16 and move two legs away from the title.

A 25 checkout made it 10-6 to Wright before he sealed the title by landing bull to complete an 85 checkout and mark a memorable first in his career.

Afterwards, an understandably emotional Wright was still in enough good humour to comment on the absence of world No. 1 Michael van Gerwen, who withdrew with a back problem on the eve of the tournament:

Meanwhile, a magnanimous Price reflected positively on his inaugural final experience:

Wright may have benefited from MVG not being involved, but Snakebite has still been the standout player and a worthy winner at Minehead.
