High School Basketball Team Loses After Getting Charged with 3 Technical Fouls
The final seconds of a high school basketball playoff game devolved into chaos when one squad was assessed with three technical fouls.
With 1.9 seconds left, a CIF San Diego Section Open Division semifinal game Tuesday was tied when St. Augustine High School senior Jack Peterson missed his second free throw. After a Foothills Christian High School player missed a last-second heave, the bout appeared headed to overtime.
Another Foothills player, however, pulled a Chris Webber by calling a timeout when his squad had none remaining. Head coach Brad Leaf went ballistic, arguing with officials until he was ejected with two technical fouls.
If Leaf kept his composure, his squad would have received a mulligan for Kyle Baldado mistakenly calling a timeout. Otto Taylor missed the first two free throws for St. Augustine, but the opposing coach's tantrum gave him four more chances.
He converted three of them to cement a 72-69 victory.
According to NBC San Diego's Derek Togerson, Foothills athletic director Tim Griggs said Lead took accountability for the ugly finish.
"We spoke right after the game," Griggs said. "He knew he blew it. He told the team 'Hey, this is my fault.' He put it on his shoulders."
