Why IPL Teams Will Strugle in CLT20
CLT20 is a new product from Lalit Modi and his team. It's a completely new tournament and very different from the IPL.
For those who doesn't know what CLT20 is, it is a cricket version of the Champions League football tournament held in Europe. Winners and runners teams from the best cricket leagues in the world from Australia (two teams), England (two as well), India (three), South Africa (two), New Zealand (one), Sri Lanka (one), and West Indies (one) take part.
Coming to the topic, IPL has three representative the winners of IPL-2 Deccan Chargers, runners-up Royal Challengers Banagalore and Delhi Dare Devils, who topped the league table.
Well, from the outside, the IPL sides looks the strongest of all and are clear favourite to win the competition. But from the first two days results two IPL team Bangalore and Delhi despite the home factor had lost the match. They where beaten comprehensively.
Tough it is early days there is no doubt that IPL teams will struggle in the tournament. The main factor is IPL teams doesn't have enough time to jell together as a team. IPL teams are not proper county clubs. County clubs in England Australia and elsewhere play as a team throughout the year; with the exception of the international players who are on duty for the country, the rest of them play together as a team for the entire season.
Looking at the IPL, the teams are seasonal, they play as team for a very short time—one and a half months. The IPL team comes to play straight into the Champions League tournament without any match practise. Whereas others teams players play for their team for entire cricket season for at least about six to seven month with their respective teams. They know their team's composition very well than the IPL teams.
It's too early to call which IPL team will falter, but while I think there may be one team in the semis, I would be surprised to see IPL team in the final.
I don't think a couple of friendlies will help to overcome this; maybe we need to have an IPL reserves league like the EPL does and have all the reserve players of the IPL franchise team play for an entire season. This makes at least the local players or the players who are not on international duty on one team for a much longer time, developing some chemistry.
Well unless the team plays together for a longer period, I think the IPL teams will struggle to beat the Australian, English, and SA opponents in CLT20.
This is my opinion; you may have yours. You can share that as well. At last I don't say an IPL team won't win it; I think they won't. I would really be happy if an IPL team win's the Champions League.
