Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Wayne Rooney, James Rodriguez

Gianni VerschuerenDec 17, 2016

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney was reportedly offered to Napoli during the summer transfer window, while James Rodriguez has once again committed himself to Real Madrid.

According to Italian agent Vincenzo Morabito, Rooney was offered a way out of Old Trafford during the summer, but his high wages made it impossible for Napoli to sign the England international.

Morabito made the revelation during an interview with Radio CRC (h/t Daily Mirror's James Whaling):

I know for a fact that he was offered to Napoli as he can't go to other English clubs, which could lead him to Spain and Italy.

He was, I repeat, offered to Napoli. While the idea is beautiful, when you look at his €10 million-a year salary, it isn't realistic.

He certainly doesn't have a good relationship with Mourinho, and therefore his future is far from United, even on loan, to give them more room.

Rooney hasn't featured much for United under manager Jose Mourinho, losing his spot in the starting XI during the club's rough start to the Premier League season. He returned in the 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, in which he played well, but he's not expected to become a regular part of the rotation.

A transfer move at some point in the near future seems likely, but the 31-year-old's high current wages make finding a suitor difficult. Apart from former club Everton, another Premier League team doesn't seem likely, with most rumours suggesting a move to the MLS or the Middle East.

Top clubs in Europe won't be too eager to spend on an ageing veteran who mostly struggled during Louis van Gaal's tenure as United boss and hasn't shown much this season either.

A January move seems unlikely with United facing a busy stretch in their schedule and Rooney proving he can still be an effective depth option on Saturday. His future will have to be sorted out at some point, however.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez continues to pledge his allegiance to Real Madrid amid rumours United are still eyeing a deal.

Speaking to Marca (h/t Daily Express' Jack Otway), the Colombia international denied rumours he's not happy at the club right now: “When you want to play at a club like Real Madrid, you always have to know that it’s a team that wants to win titles, and is used to winning titles. I am happy here. I hope I can play the final (Club World Cup) and add yet another title. I hope to continue doing good things.”

Rodriguez has dropped in the Real pecking order since his excellent first season in the Spanish capital following the 2014 FIFA World Cup, with even the likes of Lucas Vazquez and Marco Asensio preferred by manager Zinedine Zidane.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move away from the club for the better part of a year now, with many believing a change of scenery would allow him to return to the form he flashed at the 2014 World Cup. At the time, many saw him as one of the best young attacking midfielders in the world, and he has flashed that talent on occasion this season:

Real's transfer ban means Los Blancos will likely think twice about selling any of their players even if Rodriguez is no longer a crucial part of their team. Any deal for the Colombia international would have to blow the La Liga giants out of the water, and even then, the player may be unwilling to leave at this time.
