Real Madrid Transfer News: Latest on Dele Alli and Julian Weigl Rumours

Matt JonesDec 17, 2016

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has insisted the club will not sell Dele Alli after recent links to Real Madrid.

Alli enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough campaign last season, excelling at the creative crux of a Spurs side that were in the title picture for much of 2015-16. It's been suggested that Los Blancos and Paris Saint-Germain are interested in the midfielder, although Pochettino has issued a stern hands-off warning.

"They are players who are in our plans today, tomorrow and for the future," he said of Alli and Eric Dier, who has also been linked with Bayern Munich, per Oliver Todd of the Daily Mail. "We're calm about rumours because all the players have long-term contracts. They all extended their contracts four or five months ago. I think rumours are only rumours. I have never seen one offer."

According to Todd, both Madrid and PSG have taken a keen interest in Alli following his rapid rise at White Hart Lane.

While he excelled last term, the 20-year-old hasn't reached the same standards in the current season. Ben McAleer of WhoScored recently commented on a disappointing game for the youngster in the 1-0 loss to Manchester United:

However, oscillations in form are to be expected of a player who's only into his second full season of top-flight football. Alli still has a lot to learn about the game, and although he took so much in his stride in 2015-16, having featured so often for Spurs and England, a drop-off in form was inevitable at some stage.

Indeed, the links to teams such as Madrid are befitting of Alli's remarkable natural ability, and Los Blancos are a club that look to hoover up the brightest prospects in the game. But given Spurs don't seem keen to sell and Alli penned a new deal at the club in September, this one looks unlikely to materialise.

Julian Weigl in Line for New Deal

According to the Daily Mirror (h/t Michael Wade of ESPN FC), Borussia Dortmund are ready to offer star midfielder Julian Weigl a new contract to stave off interest from a clutch of European clubs, including Real Madrid.

As well as Los Blancos, Wade noted that Manchester City and Bayern Munich have also been linked with the 21-year-old. BVB are reportedly ready to increase Weigl's weekly wage from £20,000 to £60,000.

The youngster has emerged as one of the best young players in German football, having thrived at the base of the Dortmund midfield under manager Thomas Tuchel. Here is a look at why he's said to be attracting interest from so many suitors:

Weigl has all the attributes needed to be an excellent midfield player. Despite his age, he's strong in the tackle, defensively astute and is a sharp distributor, too. Casemiro aside, Los Blancos don't possess another player in that mould.

However, when asked after Dortmund's 2-2 draw with Real whether the young German was ready to play for a club like Los Blancos, Tuchel insisted there is still developing for him to do, per Dermot Corrigan of ESPN FC:

That's been obvious in the Bundesliga this term. Weigl's form has been a little inconsistent as of late, as he's had to adapt to playing alongside different midfield partners and in different systems. Lifting his base level of performance is key to him making that next step as a player.

It's a process that Dortmund seem keen for him to undertake at the Westfalenstadion. While that may frustrate Madrid, a player in Weigl's mould would help bolster one area of their incredible squad in which they are lacking in depth a little.
