Boxer Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. Dies at Age 23
Super bantamweight boxer Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. was found dead near his home in Guadalajara, Mexico, at the age of 23 on Friday.
According to ESPN.com, local authorities said his body was discovered in a car, and the cause of death isn't yet known.
Premier Boxing Champions vice president of communications Tim Smith released the following statement regarding Gonzalez's passing, according to the aforementioned ESPN.com piece:
"Everyone at Premier Boxing Champions is profoundly saddened by the death of Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. He was a fantastic boxer with a bright future. It is a tragic loss for the boxing community. We offer our deepest condolences to his family and pray for them as they cope with the loss of their beloved "Cobrita."
"
Gonzalez, who was the son of former boxer Alejandro Martin Gonzalez, went 25-3-3 in his career, including a draw against Hector Esnar Bobadilla in his final fight in October.
La Cobrita's biggest fight was against undefeated Carl Frampton for the IBF Super Bantamweight title last year, and although he fell by unanimous decision, he knocked Frampton down twice in the bout.
Frampton commented on Gonzalez with this tweet after news of his death broke:
Gonzalez began his career 22-0-2 and won the WBC Youth Intercontinental Bantamweight title by defeating Hanzel Martinez in 2013.
