Daniel Wright Flips Commitment from FSU to Alabama: Latest Comments, Reaction

Continuing what has been an underwhelming season for the Florida State Seminoles, 2017 recruit Daniel Wright announced Thursday his intention to decommit from the school and instead join the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Wright posted a statement on Twitter:

According to Scout, Wright is the No. 15 safety and No. 158 player overall.

AL.com's Matt Zenitz noted the connection between Alabama and Boyd H. Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida:

Wright originally committed to Florida State in June. In November, though, Wright said his commitment did little to deter the Crimson Tide from continuing to pursue him, per AL.com's Drew Champlin:

They came even harder after that. It was crazy. As soon as I committed, the same day, [assistant head coach/recruiting coordinator Mario Cristobal] was already hitting me up and letting me know that they were still on me. That showed me a lot. It's really going crazy right now, but I'm just taking everything as it goes.

"

Alabama has used the same approach for JaCoby Stevens, a safety/athlete who's the No. 45-ranked player in the country, per Scout. Stevens, however, reaffirmed his desire to stick with the LSU Tigers having already committed to the school.

With Wright, the Crimson Tide can count on at least one safety joining them in 2017. He's a solid defender who will help Alabama against both the run and pass—a trait not always present in safety recruits.

Playing time likely won't come early for Wright. The Crimson Tide start two sophomores—Minkah Fitzpatrick and Ronnie Harrison—at safety, while Jared Mayden, a 4-star recruit and the No. 4 safety in 2016, per Scout, is waiting in the wings should Fitzpatrick move back to corner.

Since Alabama head coach Nick Saban has rarely been shy about throwing young players into big roles, Wright could see the field as a true freshman in 2017. Given his relatively slight frame (6'2", 175 lbs), Wright would likely benefit from spending a year on the bench before he's asked to feature significantly for Alabama.
