Jeff Brohm to Purdue: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction
Western Kentucky head coach Jeff Brohm has agreed to take over as Purdue's head coach.
Purdue announced the hire on Monday after Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports first reported the agreement:
Jody Demling of Scout.com reported Brohm signed a six-year contract worth "around $20 million."
Brohm, who has become one of the more highly sought-after coaching candidates in college football, spent three seasons with Western Kentucky, leading the team to a 30-10 record and two bowl victories. He also led the Hilltoppers to their second consecutive Conference USA title this season, and they accepted a bid to the Boca Raton Bowl versus Memphis on Dec. 20.
Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports praised the hire:
While terms of Brohm's contract with Purdue haven't been disclosed, Nathan Baird of the Indianapolis Star reported that "Purdue was believed to be offering a significant increase of Brohm's earnings at Western Kentucky, where he earned $800,000 in base salary with up to $200,000 more in incentives."
And Chad Bishop of WBKO-TV reported: "Hearing close to $3 million per year for the now former WKU coach."
Brohm will be undertaking quite the reclamation project with the Boilermakers. Since Joe Tiller left the program after the 2008 season, six of the last seven campaigns have resulted in a losing record. The Boilermakers went 9-33 under Darrell Hazell, who was fired midway through the 2016 campaign. So excitement for a coach like Brohm, who was a hot name in several coaching searches, should be high in West Lafayette.
As for Western Kentucky, defensive coordinator Nick Holt has been named the team's interim head coach, according to Brett McMurphy of ESPN.com.
