Analyzing WR Rankings and Start Sit in Fantasy:

Ray TannockOct 7, 2009

One of the most difficult positions to predict in Fantasy Football week in and week out is the Wide Receiver. Sure, there are always those few names that you are absolutely sure will produce week in and week out, but aside from those handful of players, the rest is up in the air.

Each week we navigate to as many sites as possible trying to ascertain the latest and best information we can gather, in an attempt to find that perfect combination of starting receivers for our rosters.

The trouble is—more often than not—the guys who you think are gonna have a big day usually don’t, while the other guys you don’t even give a second look to often wind up being that week’s Fantasy stud…Mohammed Massaquoi anyone?

But there are a couple of things to consider when looking at the receiver position when making you decision.

Let’s take a look.

1. Know your targets well and know the enemy better! We often look at the receiver only, and tend to forget who is doing the defending on the other side of the ball, which is just as important.

A good WR going against a bad DB is a nice matchup, but a great WR going against a bad DB means the WR will probably be double covered in as many instances as the defending team can use.

In week two, the Packers’ Greg Jennings saw double coverage on nearly every single play and made a guy who is normally a Fantasy stud, virtually non-existent. The Bengals, all week leading up to that game, hinted around putting as much pressure on Rodgers’ targets as Rodgers himself and sure enough, they did!

Always keep in mind how much quality information you have on the DEFENDING team you are facing, and you will be that much more prepared.

2. Following Hot Trends. Although it may be—at times— difficult to read between the lines when a player gets hot, it’s more often  a good gauge as to who you should start week in and week out.

Leading into this past week Kenny Britt, Megatron, Derrick Mason, Mike Sims-Walker, Kevin Walter, and Steve Smith of the Giants were all hot trending receivers, and only one( Kevin Walter) were just as hot this past week.

Combining this philosophy with the one above it makes for a potent collection of tools at your disposal.

3. Do Your Homework! There is a plethora of sites out there that offer a world of information ranging from simple Q&A stuff to incredibly technical stuff. The point is, the more homework you do the more informed you are, and the more informed you are the better decision making you will make as each week passes by.

Don’t approach Fantasy Football haphazardly, and then expect to win your division along with all the loot that may be attached to it—don’t be that manager. The more you know, the better off you’ll be.

Good Luck to everyone this week. Please click here for a complete WR Start-Sit Rankings for Week Five.
