Joe Mixon Apologizes for Punching Woman in 2014
Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon has officially apologized for punching a woman two years ago.
Mixon provided his thoughts on the matter in a statement on Nov. 22 to Graham Lee Brewer of the Oklahoman:
"For the last two years, my lawyers have advised me against speaking publicly about an incident that occurred very shortly after I arrived in Norman. Today, I want to say what everyone deserves to hear from me about this matter: I am sorry. ...
I apologize to Amelia Molitor and the friends who were with her that night. I apologize to my teammates, coaches, the University of Oklahoma, and its fans. I apologize to my family and friends. I realize I let a lot of people down. I apologize to all those I disappointed or hurt.
"
The incident, which took place on July 25, 2014, before Mixon started his football career at Oklahoma, led to 100 hours of community service and a suspension for the entire 2014-15 season.
"I was not drinking," the 20-year-old added in his apology. "I have never had a drink in my life."
Mixon was sued by the victim this past July, but two of the three charges were dismissed by a federal judge Monday, according to Nolan Clay of the Oklahoman.
However, the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that video of the incident must be released, per Chuck Carlton of the Dallas Morning News.
The running back was also suspended for the Sooners' game against Iowa State on Nov. 3 for an unrelated incident involving a parking attendant.
Mixon has shown great ability on the field, totaling 1,183 rushing yards on 7.0 yards per carry for Oklahoma this season as well as 449 receiving yards on 32 catches. However, his past could cause problems as he looks to play at the next level.
Matt Miller of Bleacher Report noted he would be one of the best at his position:
Considering the NFL's recent troubles with domestic violence, it might be difficult for teams to overlook his past.
