Nichols transferred to Virginia last year after playing the previous two seasons at Memphis. He was forced to sit out the 2015-16 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
On October 28, it was announced Nichols had been suspended by the school for the Cavaliers' first two scrimmages and the Nov. 11 season opener against UNC Greensboro due to a violation of team rules.
A redshirt junior, Nichols made his season debut for Virginia on Tuesday with 11 points and three rebounds in 16 minutes against St. Francis.
Over the summer, when Virginia made a trip to Spain for five games, London Perrantes talked about his new teammate's talent.
"He’s definitely very skilled offensively," Perrantes said, per the Richmond Times-Dispatch. "He can shoot the ball, the mid-range three sometimes. He can finish pretty well with both hands. ... It will be exciting to be out there and play with him."
During his two seasons at Memphis, Nichols averaged 11 points and 5.1 rebounds per game and shot 53.7 percent.
Virginia has started the 2016-17 season 2-0 and is ranked eighth in the Associated Press Top 25.
