Real Madrid Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Pepe's Future
Jose Mourinho reportedly wants to reunite with Real Madrid centre-back Pepe. The Manchester United manager worked with the Portugal international when he was in charge of Los Blancos from 2010-13.
Mourinho is interested in acquiring the veteran defender whose contract expires in the summer, per Spanish publication Marca (h/t Rob Dawson of the Manchester Evening News).
For his part, Pepe wants to stay with the club until he's 36, but Los Blancos reportedly won't offer the 33-year-old more than a one-year contract extension. The defender is seeking a two-year offer, according to Marca's Jose Felix Diaz and Marc Mayo.

Their report indicated how soon interested parties can move for Pepe if he can't resolve his contract issues in the Spanish capital: "With his deal running out soon, Los Blancos will know that the defender can sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign team as early as January 1, with Chelsea and Manchester United among a host of sides linked to Pepe."

Chelsea's interest is natural, since manager Antonio Conte loves to play three at the back. The Italian has also never had any qualms about trusting experienced defenders, dating back to his days in Juventus. Players such as Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli all thrived under Conte.
However, United seems a more suitable destination for Pepe should he leave the Santiago Bernabeu. He knows Mourinho well and fits as the type of central defender the Portuguese coach usually favours.
Specifically, Pepe is a physically uncompromising and no-nonsense stopper—he's tough in the tackle and strong in the air. He also boasts the versatility and comfort on the ball required for playing a holding role at the base of midfield, which is a ploy Mourinho often used in big games when he was with Real.
More than his physical attributes, though, Pepe is a true antagonist on the pitch. His willingness to take a tumble to win a free-kick, along with making a cynical challenge or two of his own to stop the opposition, often makes him a figure of derision.

Sean Ingle of the Guardian was one of several to criticize Pepe after his perceived simulation against Atletico Madrid during last season's UEFA Champions League final.
Yet those who focus on the negatives can miss what a good defender Pepe is. Even at 33, he remains one of the game's best.
He offered a timely reminder of his enduring quality last season when he helped Real to European glory. In particular, Pepe was magnificent in the semi-final against Manchester City.
He followed his efforts at club level by helping Portugal win UEFA Euro 2016 in the summer, where he formed a rock-solid defence alongside Southampton's Jose Fonte.
Injuries have blighted Pepe since then, but Real manager Zinedine Zidane could still use his know-how and brawn. After all, the former France international's squad has already conceded 10 times in 11 La Liga matches this season, per Sky Sports.

Los Blancos have also failed to keep a clean sheet in four Champions League matches, according to UEFA's official website.
Gifted but erratic Frenchman Raphael Varane is still guilty of mistakes, while 30-year-old Sergio Ramos has also had his own share of injury woes. Meanwhile, Nacho hasn't always convinced when called upon as a replacement.
Defenders often play for longer in Europe's top leagues, so it would make sense for Real to give Pepe his two-year deal.
