Fenerbahce vs. Manchester United: Jose Mourinho's Key Pre-Match Presser Comments

Matt JonesNov 2, 2016

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho declined to comment on the recent charges put to him by the Football Association, although he did explain his reasons for allowing Bastian Schweinsteiger to join up with the first-team squad again.

The Portuguese coach addressed the media on Wednesday ahead of his side's UEFA Europa League clash with Fenerbahce on Thursday; the presser came a day after Mourinho was charged with misconduct by the FA amid allegations he used "abusive" and "insulting" language towards the match officials during the 0-0 draw with Burnley.

When asked about the potential sanctions he faced, Mourinho had little to say, per Simon Peach of the Press Association:

"There's no reaction," the former Chelsea boss said, per Liam Prenderville of the Daily Mirror.

For Mourinho, it's the second charge in under a week; he has also been accused of misconduct after comments he made about referee Anthony Taylor ahead of his side's clash with Liverpool.

Per Paul Hirst of the Times, when he was asked about his respect towards match officials, Mourinho was keen to move on:

The other major development at United this week was the reintegration of Schweinsteiger into the senior setup.

The veteran German midfielder was snapped training alongside first-team stars earlier in the week having been previously forced to train alone or with the under-23 team.

Mourinho outlined his reasons for bringing Schweinsteiger back into the squad, per Hirst:

"In this moment we have no problems in midfield like we do in defence," Mourinho continued, per Prenderville. "If we do have problems in midfield, he's one option for us. It's a decision that can be positive for the group."

United have an important game to come against Fenerbahce on Thursday. After falling to defeat in their opening game of the competition against Feyenoord, the Red Devils have bounced back well in subsequent matches, beating Zorya Luhansk and then the Turkish giants at Old Trafford.

During the previous meeting between United and Fenerbahce, there seemed to be a clear chasm in quality between the two sides, as the Premier League outfit romped to a 4-1 win. However, Mourinho expects a different game in Turkey.

"For more than half an hour, they were solid and the game was not easy for us," said the United chief. "The fact that Fenerbahce has back-to-back victories is not a surprise. They have very good players and very experienced managers like Dick Advocaat. He plays players with experience of the highest level, the experience of international competitions."

Even if United were to get turned over here, wins in their last two games mean they'd still have a very good chance of making it through to the knockout stages.

Per the club's official Twitter feed, Mourinho said those displays have laid a positive foundation:

In terms of team news, Mourinho had a negative update on the condition of Antonio Valencia, who has excelled at right-back so far in 2016-17. "Valencia is a bad injury, it's an important fracture in his arm and an important surgery too, so he will be out for a while," said the manager, per Hirst.

The Portuguese also provided an update on the ongoing recovery of Phil Jones, who has been dogged by injuries as of late:

The Sukru Saracoglu Stadium is a notoriously difficult venue to visit. United's players will be in for a hostile welcome from the home supporters, who are fervent and ferocious in the backing of their men. There's no doubting this match will not be as straightforward as the 4-1 win at Old Trafford last month.

After disappointing recent results against the likes of Chelsea and Burnley, Mourinho will demand a strong showing from the XI he selects on Thursday.

A professional performance and three points would lift spirits ahead of the visit to Swansea City this weekend, while another disjointed effort would prompt further scrutiny of this Red Devils side.
