New York Jets vs. Arizona Cardinals Betting Odds, Analysis, NFL Pick

OddsShark.comOct 13, 2016

The New York Jets will be searching for an end to a slide that has seen them lose three straight games by double-digit margins as they take on the Arizona Cardinals on Monday night.

The Jets have mustered just 11 points per game during their skid and covered in just two of their past nine road dates. Meanwhile, the Cardinals return home on a high after dominating San Francisco in a 33-21 win last Thursday night but remain a shaky bet, covering just twice in their past eight games on home turf.

Point spread: The Cardinals opened as 6.5-point favorites; the total was 47 early in the week, according to sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark. (Line updates and matchup report)

NFL pick, via Odds Shark computer: 32.2-13.4 Cardinals (NFL picks on every game)

Why the Jets can cover the spread

Pivot Ryan Fitzpatrick avoided throwing a pick last week in Pittsburgh and must continue making effective use of receiver Brandon Marshall, who recorded a season-high 114 yards against the Steelers and scored for a second straight week.

With the Cardinals' rush defense lagging at 23rd in the NFL, running back Matt Forte could play a big role similar to his 100-yard, three-touchdown performance in the Jets' 37-31 Week 2 win in Buffalo.

Arizona pivot Carson Palmer is expected to return but has enjoyed limited success against the Jets, tossing three picks against just one score over his last two games against New York. Palmer must also contend with a Jets pass defense that has tallied 12 sacks this season.

Why the Cardinals can cover the spread

The Cardinals seized on San Francisco's mistakes last week, scoring 17 points off three Niners turnovers, and will be looking for more against a Jets team that has given up the ball on 13 occasions this season.

Larry Fitzgerald had a big night in San Francisco, scoring twice on six catches, and will be targeted regularly against the Jets, who have allowed over 300 passing yards on three occasions this year.

Despite its struggles, the Arizona defense remains 10th in the league in points allowed and has surrendered 20 or fewer points in six of its past nine home contests.

Smart pick

The Jets are undefeated in five meetings with the Cardinals since their move to the desert, covering in three, including a pair of dates in Arizona.

Carson Palmer looked shaky early on this season and returns to action with a lot to prove. However, the Cardinals have struggled to dominate in recent contests when favored at home by seven or more points, going 4-3 SU and 1-6 ATS in their past seven such outings.

Look for Arizona to claim consecutive SU wins for the first time this year but fail to generate sufficient offense to cover a steadily growing spread.

Betting trends

The Cardinals are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games at home.

The Jets are 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven games after an ATS loss.

The total has gone under in five of the Jets' last six games on the road.
