Singer Takes Knee While Performing National Anthem Before Sacramento Kings Game
Singer Leah Tysse took a knee during her rendition of the national anthem at the Sacramento Kings preseason game Monday.
Golden 1 Center opened its doors for its first NBA event when the Kings defeated Israeli club Maccabi Haifa, 135-96. Before the contest, Tysse made a statement by kneeling as she belted out the final line of "The Star-Spangled Banner."
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick first sat in protest during the anthem prior to his team's third preseason game. Multiple athletes have carried out the demonstration against racial injustice and police brutality.
Unlike the NFL, the NBA has a decree in place preventing players from carrying out the demonstration. Per the league's rule book, "Players, coaches and trainers are to stand and line up in a dignified posture along the sidelines or on the foul line during the playing of the national anthem."
The singer, however, doesn't fall under its watch. Nevertheless, the NBA shouldn't expect its players to stay silent on the issue.
