Happy Birthday Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Top 5 Goals for Paris Saint-Germain

Andrew GibneyOct 3, 2016

October 3 will now and forever be known as Zlatan Ibrahimovic Day. The Swedish forward has made a huge impact at every club that has been privileged to call him one of their own. Yet nowhere did he make more of an impact than at Paris Saint-Germain.

Joining in the summer of 2012, PSG bought the striker from AC Milan, and he took the Parisians from a club trying to become great to four-time Ligue 1 champions and UEFA Champions League quarter-finalists on numerous occasions.

He may not have been able to lift PSG, or himself, to the final four or win Europe's elite prize, but he changed the fabric of the club, and ever since he joined, expectations have been lifted to another level.

Ibrahimovic left Paris this summer, joining Manchester United once his contract was up. His final game came against Olympique de Marseille in the Stade de France, playing in the Coupe de France final.

Zlatan scored twice and set up Edinson Cavani for the fourth as PSG beat their fierce rivals 4-2. Bowing out a legend after scoring his 155th and 156th goals for the club, you couldn't write the script better if you hired Steven Spielberg.

With 156 to choose from, it's difficult to pick just five; however, on his 35th birthday, here are Ibrahimovic's top five goals for Paris Saint-Germain.

No. 5: August 11, 2012, vs. FC Lorient

The other four goals will stand out, but with another 152 to pick from, it had to be of significant importance to get on this list. There was only one place to start. Right at the very beginning.

In his last season for Milan, Zlatan had scored 28 times in 32 games, so on arrival in Paris, the expectations couldn't have been higher. Imagine the shock in the Parc des Princes when the home side found themselves 2-0 down to FC Lorient.

Maxwell turned the first into his own net, then Jeremie Aliadiere, three minutes into added time, made it 2-0 for the Breton club just before the break. This is what the club had paid for, someone to step up when they needed a Plan B, someone to rescue them.

Brazilian midfielder Nene played a beautiful ball over the top of the Lorient defence. Ibrahimovic used his superb strength to hold off Gregory Bourillon before stabbing the ball past Fabien Audard.

Not the best goal stylistically, but that was the moment that kicked off his wonderful four years. The Zlatan-era had truly begun.

No. 4: April 8, 2015, vs. Saint-Etienne

Zlatan's third season was a mixed campaign. Injuries took their toll, PSG continually brought him back too quickly and he often looked off the pace.

Playing against Les Verts, in the semi-final of the Coupe de France, it was the Swede who stepped up and inspired his side to the final.

He opened the scoring with a penalty, but Romain Hamouma would equalise. Ezequiel Lavezzi steered a wonderful header beyond Stephane Ruffier to make it 2-1, but the 'keeper's night would get much worse.

With Zlatan steaming towards him from the left, Ruffier was expecting the shot, but the forward had other ideas. He tapped the ball to his right, went left and was all alone to tap the ball into the net. It was a stunning piece of individual skill to put the game out of sight.

Ibrahimovic would complete his hat-trick just before the final whistle, finishing off a tremendous solo performance.

The final wouldn't provide as much of a challenge. PSG faced Ligue 2 side Auxerre, and Cavani's 64th-minute goal was enough to confirm the capital club as winners.

That cup run should always be remembered for Zlatan's amazing improvisation at the Parc des Princes.

No. 3: October 7, 2012, vs. Olympique de Marseille

Big players are built for the big occasion, and going into the Week 8 fixture against Marseille, PSG were looking towards their new hero to destroy their fierce rivals.

This was Ibrahimovic's first experience of Le Classique. He had played in huge rivalries before, but this would be a special night in the Stade Velodrome.

Andre-Pierre Gignac opened the scoring for the home side after 17 minutes, signalling to the Swede that he was in for a fight. Six minutes later, he responded.

In a moment that would become commonplace, Ibrahimovic seemed to defy physics and gravity. Brazilian Maxwell, his long-term friend, whipped the corner in towards the penalty spot.

Zlatan looked to be leaning backwards, going away from the ball, but somehow, in a karate-kick motion, not only made contact but put an amazing amount of pace on the shot. Steve Mandanda had no chance, and we had our first piece of Ibra-magique in a PSG shirt.

No. 2: October 23, 2013, vs. Anderlecht

This is perhaps one of Ibrahimovic's best matches for the Parisian club. There was nothing quite on the line as PSG arrived at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium, but that didn't stop the Swede lighting up the night and putting on a masterclass.

The first, an easy close-range finish after being picked out by Gregory van der Wiel, opened the scoring after 17 minutes. The second was very similar, another low cross from the Dutchman, but Zlatan flicked it in with style.

After 36 minutes, it happened. The ball came down the left flank, played into the middle by Maxwell. Bram Nuytinck headed the ball away, seemingly to safety. Zlatan had other ideas.

He must have been the best part of 30 yards out when the ball fell to his right foot. Ibrahimovic, without even a second of self doubt, pummelled a devastating thunderbolt into the top left-hand corner, giving Thomas Kaminski no chance.

Easily one of the best single strikes you will ever see.

No. 1:  October 19, 2013, vs. SC Bastia

Hervin Ongenda, at this stage of his career, is set to leave Paris without really achieving anything of note. However, on October 19, 2013, he put himself in the frame to always be a part of PSG history. Sadly, for the young forward, he didn't know much about it.

Playing against SC Bastia at the Parc des Princes, 10 minutes in, Lucas Moura attacked down the right flank. His low cross flashed towards the teenager. He instinctively lifted his boot to make contact, sending the ball into the air.

Surrounded by two defenders, the ball was going behind Ibrahimovic, with the attack looking like it was about to break down. Then the striker stretched his right leg out behind his back and, with one single flick, met it perfectly with his back heel.

At the time, the fans in the stands wouldn't have realised the greatness of the moment. It's only in slow motion that you can fully appreciate the extent of the magic the man possessed.
