The race was originally scheduled for Saturday, but inclement weather forced a postponement until Sunday morning, creating a doubleheader at Dover with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race to follow. For Suarez, the win secured his placement in the next round of the Xfinity Series.
He'll join Elliott Sadler in the round of eight, as both drivers have now advanced. Sunday's race was the second in the round of 12 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Chase.
Erik Jones opened on the pole Sunday morning, but Suarez raced to the lead by the fifth lap and largely controlled things from there, leading a total of 123 of the 200 laps. Justin Allgaier, who finished third, mounted a stiff challenge around the 150-mile mark and held the lead, but Suarez was too strong on the day.
Fox Sports: NASCAR shared Suarez crossing the finish line:
Ty Dillon, meanwhile, finished second after starting in the back of the pack.
But the morning belonged to Suarez. Danielle Trotta of Fox Sports was pleased to see him earn the win:
And as Dustin Long of NASCAR Talk noted: "[Suarez] had the dominant car. It helped with teammate Erik Jones struggling with his car’s handling and Dillon having to start at the rear because of an unapproved adjustment."
Jones was less than pleased with his showing.
"Just kind of an embarrassing day," he said of his 16th-place finish, per Long.
He won't be the only driver upset after Sunday morning. Jeff Gluck of USA Today noted that several drivers now find themselves in danger of being eliminated from the Chase:
The next race in the Xfinity Series Chase takes place at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on Friday evening at 8 p.m. ET. That race will eliminate four drivers, which will ramp up the intensity as a number of drivers look to survive to the next round.
