AP College Football Poll 2016: Complete Week 6 Rankings Released

Tyler ConwayOct 2, 2016

Heading into this week, it looked like we were in store for one of the best college football weekends in recent memory.

The games themselves did not disappoint.

Alabama and Ohio State remain the cream of the nation's crop, but immediately behind them sits a reshuffled Top 25 that looks far different from its predecessor. Clemson moved up to No. 3 after a hard-fought win over Louisville, while Michigan and Washington round out the Top Five.

Here's a look at how the entire poll played out:

Nine games involving Top 25 teams were decided by one score, including the two sitting atop Saturday's marquee.

Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson overcame their own first-half inconsistencies to put on a show for the nationally televised audience, with Clemson scoring the final two touchdowns for a 42-36 win.

Watson finished with 306 yards through the air and five scores against three interceptions, adding 91 yards on the ground. Jackson had 295 yards passing and a touchdown against a pick while putting up a game-high 162 rushing yards and two scores; his 31 carries were nearly double that of any other player.

"We both played good for our teams, and [the Heisman] is out of my control," Watson said, per David M. Hale of ESPN.com. "My mind is on a national championship. It's not on the Heisman."

Michigan's 14-7 win over Wisconsin was no less competitive but far uglier. The Badgers accounted for just 159 total yards and turned the ball over three times against a swarming Wolverines defense, their only touchdown coming via a short 31-yard drive set up by an interception return. Wilton Speight connected with Amara Darboh from 46 yards out in the fourth quarter for the game-winning score.

Michigan sealed the victory with a spectacular one-handed interception by Jourdan Lewis. ESPN's College Football account offered a replay of the clincher:

"We see him make a lot of plays, but that was on another level," Speight said, per Mark Snyder of the Detroit Free Press. "I think he jumped and floated for five yards and somehow caught it with one hand. That's a guy that's going to be playing on Sunday for a long time. I'm glad he's on our team."

Michigan now sits 5-0 and seems primed to head into its season-ending matchup with Ohio State undefeated. The Wolverines do not have another game against a ranked opponent until the Buckeyes, and the greatest looming threat on their schedule (rival Michigan State) is already 0-2 in the Big Ten.

"If you want to be a great team, you’ve got to learn from mistakes," Speight said, per George Schroeder of USA Today. "We do that. To have so many of them, it’s a lot to learn and a lot to build on. ... It’s a good feeling to have that type of game and walk away victorious."

Washington moves up to No. 5 after laying the lumber on Stanford in a 44-6 romp Friday. The Huskies appear to easily be the class of the Pac-12 but should be tested next week in Oregon. For now, though, there hasn't been a better feeling about this program since the 2000 Rose Bowl team.

"We're not there," coach Chris Petersen said, per Ivan Maisel of ESPN.com. "I'm not saying we're there. I know how this thing goes. You sleep on anybody, feeling like we got it, we got it figured out. I know what comes next."

Tennessee kept its equally unlikely undefeated run alive with a Hail Mary win over Georgia. The Vols appeared dead in the water until a last-second heave landed in the outstretched arms of Jauan Jennings.

Elsewhere, Florida State, TCU, Texas, Utah and San Diego State each suffered losses against unranked opponents. North Carolina enters the poll at No. 17 after handing the Seminoles their second loss of the season, while Oklahoma re-enters at No. 20 after scraping by in a high-scoring affair with TCU.

Colorado, West Virginia and Virginia Tech also moved into the poll this week.
