FSU vs. North Carolina: Score and Twitter Reaction from Seminoles' Upset

Joe PantornoOct 1, 2016

North Carolina Tar Heels kicker Nick Weiler had never attempted a field goal over 50 yards entering Saturday. But as time expired against the No. 12-ranked Florida State Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium, Weiler's 54-yard field-goal attempt split the uprights to deliver the Tar Heels a 37-35 win over the Seminoles, via Carolina Football:

UNC looked like it was finished when Florida State took a 35-34 lead with 23 seconds left, but a desperation drive that was aided by a pass-interference penalty on Tarvarus McFadden put the ball on the Seminoles' 37-yard line to give Weiler a chance.

ESPN's Charlie Hulme didn't hold back his affection for North Carolina's new hero:

Cincinnati Bengals running back and North Carolina alumnus Giovani Bernard knew Weiler was capable of delivering on the huge stage:

It was a day of redemption for kickers on both sides of the field.

Florida State kicker Ricky Aguayo momentarily made up for three missed field goals by giving the Seminoles a 35-34 lead on an extra point with 23 seconds remaining. Down six, Florida State embarked on a nine-play, 75-yard drive that ate up 2:08, capped off by quarterback Deondre Francois' two-yard touchdown run.

Ralph D. Russo of the Associated Press was impressed by Francois:

Francois passed for 372 yards on the day, but Florida State's ground game was just as essential in overturning a 21-point first-half deficit.

Star rusher Dalvin Cook racked up 140 yards and three touchdowns, while Francois added another 32 to go with one score on the ground.

North Carolina's offense was paced by quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who threw for 405 yards and three touchdowns while completing 31 of 38 passes.

Behind his arm, the Tar Heels punched Florida State in the mouth, jumping out to an early 21-0 lead.

With 7:57 left in the first quarter, Trubisky used his legs to keep a 2nd-and-6 alive before hitting T.J. Logan for a 22-yard touchdown.

Florida State's offense showed promise, but the kicking game destroyed any momentum.

Aguayo missed three attempts during the first quarter, which could have lifted Florida State to an early 9-7 lead. He missed from 45 yards twice and had a 52-yarder blocked.

ESPN's Andrea Adelson tried to keep it civil:

Kevin O'Donnell of Fox 13 believed there was some sort of hex on the school:

While Florida State was unable to put points on the board, North Carolina's offense remained sharp.

After Aguayo's third missed field goal, UNC went 72 yards in seven plays to go up 14-0 thanks to a Logan 13-yard touchdown run. The Tar Heels went 90 yards on their next drive to go up three touchdowns with 6:52 left in the half.

Trubisky showed off his athletic ability on that third score, stretching out for a four-yard touchdown run.

ESPN College Football took the opportunity to give advice to aspiring football players:

Fox Sports' Stewart Mandel was direct in his critique of Florida State's defense:

With less than five minutes before halftime, Florida State finally got on the board thanks to a Cook nine-yard run.

After a North Carolina fumble and a Weiler missed field goal, the Seminoles pulled back to within a touchdown when Jacques Patrick punched it home from the goal line to cap off a 66-yard drive in the third.

The Sun Sentinel's Shandel Richardson saw it as the beginning of the end for the Tar Heels:

North Carolina came back with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Trubisky to Mack Hollins to momentarily open up a two-touchdown advantage again, but it wouldn't last long.

Florida State embarked on two monstrous, methodical drives to tie the game at 28 with 5:11 left in the contest.

Starting with 7:13 left in the third, the Seminoles went 76 yards on 15 plays. Cook saw the ball on 11 of those plays and scored from one yard out for his second touchdown of the game.

Had it not been for Cook, Bleacher Report's Sanjay Kirpalani believed Saturday's game would have been over long before the fourth quarter:

After forcing a quick North Carolina three-and-out, Florida State went 75 yards on 12 plays over 6:55. Cook put the exclamation point on the drive yet again with a three-yard touchdown run.

Dustin McComas of Orangebloods.com finally found the Cook who developed into a Heisman Trophy candidate last season:

Evan Barnes of the Los Angeles Daily News couldn't believe the Seminoles came back:

But ESPN's Aaron Dodson began to expect the worst for the Tar Heels:

With 2:31 left in the game, Trubisky hit Thomas Jackson on a screen pass that went 34 yards to the house to break the 28-28 tie. But Weiler's blocked extra point set up the dramatics.

CBS Sports' Tom Fornelli was sure he knew how it was going to end:

So was Matt Lindner of the Chicago Tribune:

But the Tar Heels managed to pull out the win and end Florida State's nation-leading 22-game home winning streak.

While North Carolina could enter the Top 25 next week at 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC, Florida State's chances of winning the conference took an enormous hit.

Postgame Reaction

After the game, North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora revealed why he had confidence in Weiler attempting such a long field goal, per InsideCarolina:

He said he tried to prep his kicker as much as possible in the frantic conditions, per Graham Watson of Yahoo Sports: "I just said look, we’re gonna be in a two-minute situation where you’re going to need to kick a field goal to win. So get ready."

Weiler gave him an idea of where the Tar Heels offense needed to get the ball, per Andrew Carter of the Charlotte Observer:

Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher still tried to stay positive after the demoralizing loss, per Tim Linafelt of Seminoles.com: "There's a lot of good, but there's way too much bad. ... The schemes are good. That's the same defense we ran in 2013, 2014, 2015."

He didn't shy away from blame, per the Orlando Sentinel:

North Carolina will play Virginia Tech next Saturday before a tough road matchup against No. 14 Miami on Oct. 15. A win against the Hurricanes could cement the Tar Heels' status as a Top 10 threat in the polls.

Florida State, on the other hand, will meet those same Hurricanes next week in one of the most exciting rivalries in college football.

The Seminoles have won the past six matchups, but against an improving Miami program, their defense will have its hands full.
