Big East Report Card Week Five: No A's...

Tom EdringtonOct 5, 2009

Week Five in the Big East was a quick one with Thursday and Friday games. Was any one worthy of a great grade?

West Virginia 35, Colorado 24

You can give Noel Devine an A+ for this performance. He ran for a career high 220 yards on 22 carries. But the Mountaineers are having huge problems with turnovers. They better learn how to take care of the football or that's going to bite them in the butt when they get into Big East play. This one was iffy for a while but in the end, West Virginia prevailed as expected and stands at 3-1.

Grade: B

Pittsburgh 35, Louisville 10

Louisville (1-3, 0-1) was tough for a half, but Pitt's defense was tough on the Cards the entire game. This one went about as expected. Bill Stull played well for the Panthers (4-1, 1-0). He threw for three touchdowns, went 16-for-23 and 242 yards. Freshmen backs Dion Lewis and Ray Graham combined for 162 yards rushing.

Grades:

Pittsburgh:  B+

Louisville: D

South Florida 34, Syracuse 20

South Florida (5-0, 1-0) came to the Carrier Dome fearing a letdown from the huge emotional win over Florida State. What the Bulls got were seven turnovers from the Orange (2-3, 0-1).

Quarterback Greg Paulus had an awful afternoon with five interceptions. USF's defense was solid and tough as expected and B.J. Daniels did a good job on offense. USF has had good success in the dome and Saturday was no different.

Grades:

South Florida: B+

Syracuse:   F

Cincinnati 37, Miami Ohio 13

Nothing out of the ordinary here. Easy road trip for the Bearcats (5-0, 1-0). They easily handled the winless Redhawks. Tony Pike had a lot of incompletions (23-for-42, 270 yards) but managed two touchdown passes. Mardy Gilyard caught six for 75 and running back Jacob Ramsey went for 103 yards on 13 carries and scored three touchdowns.

Grade: B+

There you have it. Professor Tom was a little stingy with the grades. No A's. But we're in Week Six now and we're expecting teams to step up their game. See you next Monday for the Week Six grades!
