WWE SmackDown Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from September 20

Erik BeastonSep 21, 2016

The Lunatic Fringe ran the Ambrose Asylum on Tuesday night. Dean Ambrose pinned John Cena cleanly in the center of the ring and earned himself "biggest winner" status from the Sept. 20 episode of WWE SmackDown Live.

The former WWE world champion rebounded from a disappointing last week to re-establish himself as one of the faces of the blue brand, following up his victory with a Dirty Deeds to AJ Styles and the announcement that he will challenge The Phenomenal One for the top prize in professional wrestling a week from Tuesday.

It had appeared as though Ambrose was en route to a possible heel turn, but on Tuesday, he ended that speculation. Instead, WWE Creative appears content to let him be the alternative to Cena, the edgy babyface he originally rose to prominence as. That is a wise move. As the generic featured babyface, he faltered, and his championship reign failed to live up to expectations and could even be considered a disappointment.

Without the pressure of the title, he can be himself again, and for the sake of SmackDown's quality, that is a good thing.

Winners: The Usos

All it took was a heel turn and a makeover to breathe life back into Jimmy and Jey Uso. More aggressive and nastier than ever before, they picked up a clean win over American Alpha Tuesday night, capitalizing on Jason Jordan's sympathy for his tag partner, Chad Gable, and earning a shot at the SmackDown tag team titles.

More serious than they have been in years, it is refreshing to see the two-time champions change their game up a bit. For the last year, they had fallen into a pattern of repetition and staleness, and the fans let them know. They were greeted with boos in arenas across the country, some of it their own fault.

Now more motivated than they have been in months, they appear to have a renewed sense of importance. That bodes well for them and for the tag team division, which will benefit from their expertise and experience.

Loser: Apollo Crews

The brand extension continues to be a disaster for Crews, who was systematically picked apart and beaten by Baron Corbin on Tuesday night as if he has taken over for Heath Slater as the resident punching bag of the blue brand.

Once considered one of the breakout stars with the most potential to be a future world champion, Crews is now battling for relevance.

His lack of confidence on the microphone has derailed his momentum and has been readily apparent every time he has had the chance to cut a promo. He needs to work on that element of his game to regain the trust of management and capture the attention of the WWE Universe.

Otherwise, he is an impressive athlete with no substance, and fans will not accept that in today's WWE.

Just ask Roman Reigns.

Winner: Alexa Bliss

The promo cut by Alexa Bliss at the top of SmackDown was one that a skilled, experienced talker would deliver as the final hype for a big pay-per-view main event. Yet there was Bliss, two months into her main roster career, delivering it with poise.

She tore Becky Lynch apart, calling her a lovable loser and claiming that she will prove to be nothing more than a one-hit wonder come No Mercy. It was a strong bit of heel work that showcased Bliss' talents on the mic ahead of a match that will prove her knack for the in-ring game.

Arguably the best heel on the SmackDown women's roster, do not be surprised to see her parlay this small push into a much more significant one in the months to come.
