Memphis Grizzlies Release Uniforms in Remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr.
The Memphis Grizzlies have teamed up with the National Civil Rights Museum to unveil uniforms in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
On April 4, 1968, the civil rights activist was assassinated in Memphis. These " Pride" uniforms will honor his legacy as part of a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration game on January 15, the reverend's birthday, against the Chicago Bulls.
The Grizzlies will not play on Monday's national holiday the following day.
Per NBA.com, National Civil Rights Museum President Terri Lee Freeman commented on the tribute:
"When the idea first came about of creating a jersey, I was so excited about it because I could see the potential for something like this. As we created it, we wanted it to have a level of integrity, so we included the wreath and included the railing and the sign. I think it has come out as a wonderful product, and think it will be great for the Grizzlies and the National Civil Rights Museum, but also messaging that we need to always remember what happened and not forget about the work that has yet to be done. That's exactly what the Museum does.
"
The wreath, , piping and green color on the jersey are all connected to the Lorraine Motel where King was killed. The site now serves as the museum's location.
