The Usos vs. The Hype Bros: Winner and Reaction from WWE Backlash 2016

Mike ChiariSep 11, 2016

The Usos defeated The Hype Bros Sunday at WWE Backlash in a second-chance match to earn a spot in the SmackDown Tag Team Championship tournament final against Heath Slater and Rhyno later in the night.

Jimmy Uso registered the win by using the Tequila Sunrise finishing move on Zack Ryder's leg.

Aaron Oster of Rolling Stone and Ryan Satin of ProWrestlingSheet commented on the resurrection of the Tequila Sunrise:

WWE provided one of the highlights of the match:

The tag team tournament semifinals were seemingly held on the go-home edition of SmackDown prior to Backlash.

Slater and Rhyno beat The Hype Bros to earn their spot in the finals, while American Alpha shockingly defeated The Usos in less than a minute.

Following The Usos' loss, however, Jimmy and Jey snapped and attacked both Chad Gable and Jason Jordan, as seen in this video courtesy of WWE's official Twitter account:

The Samoan twins focused on Gable's knee in the attack, and it was later revealed on WWE Network's Talking Smack that Gable suffered an MCL injury and would be out of action for two-to-four weeks.

Since that meant American Alpha would be unavailable for Backlash, McMahon announced that the losers of the two semifinal matches would meet at Backlash with the winner earning the right to battle Slater and Rhyno to become the first SmackDown Tag Team champions of the new era.

The Usos had been fan favorites for the majority of their WWE careers prior to the incident involving American Alpha, but they made it clear they no longer wanted the support of the WWE Universe:

With a new attitude and a more aggressive streak than ever before, Jimmy and Jey entered Backlash looking like major threats to do some damage and ascend to the top of SmackDown's tag division.

The team of Ryder and Mojo Rawley stood between them and a shot at the titles, though, which set the stage for a high-stakes encounter.

While The Usos have been teaming together on some level for their entire lives as twins, Ryder and Rawley quickly developed a strong bond and chemistry when they were thrown together as a team in NXT.

Ryder went back to singles competition and even won the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania, but when Rawley was called up to SmackDown, The Hype Bros reformed, and they seemingly hadn't missed a beat.

They brought their energetic brand of wrestling to Backlash; however, the refocused Usos proved too much to handle in the de facto No. 1 contendership match.

The Usos moved one step closer to the SmackDown Tag Team Championships with the victory, while The Hype Bros seemed destined to toil in the mid-to-low tier of SmackDown's tag division until a new opportunity presents itself.
