Bastian Schweinsteiger Left out of Manchester United's Europa League Squad

Matt JonesSep 3, 2016

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has been left out of the team’s squad for the upcoming UEFA Europa League campaign.

The 32-year-old has yet to feature under new Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho, and he will not be part of the team’s continental effort either. Per ESPN FC, the German hasn't been included among the names the manager selected to take part in the competition.

Schweinsteiger was included in United’s squad for the Premier League earlier this week, as noted in the piece. Per Squawka Football, it’s been quite the couple of days for the veteran midfielder:

Nevertheless, there’s a sense that if the former Bayern Munich man were to play any part at all for the Red Devils this season, then it may have been in the Europa League, as managers often rest and rotate key members of their squad.

Schweinsteiger, who moved to Old Trafford last summer from Bayern, is no longer viewed as a crucial part of the setup. Despite being one of the most decorated footballers of his generation, the midfielder has been training with the club’s reserve team since Mourinho took charge.

United will take on Fenerbahce, Feyenoord and Zorya Luhansk in Group A of this year’s competition. For Mourinho, it’s a tournament that could provide a route back into the UEFA Champions League should the Red Devils come up short in their domestic effort, as the winner qualifies for the top-tier tournament next term.

For Schweinsteiger, first-team football looks as though it’ll be difficult to come by this term, especially given United have a clutch of quality midfield options. With the transfer window closed, he’s set for a frustrating spell on the sidelines until the January market opens.
