Darren Collison Pleads Guilty to Misdemeanor Domestic Violence Charge
Sacramento Kings point guard Darren Collison reached a plea agreement in his domestic violence case Friday.
Per James Ham of CSN Bay Area, Collison pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of domestic violence, and he will have his 20-day jail sentence commuted by working on community-service projects overseen by Placer County, California.
Ham provided a statement from the Placer County district attorney's office:
Ham noted Collison received three years of informal probation and must attend a 52-week treatment class as part of his plea deal.
Ham included a statement from Collison:
"Words cannot describe the feelings and regret that I have been experiencing the last few months. My family and I found ourselves in such an unfamiliar situation and it has been a difficult few months. This is far from who I am as a person and not something I am proud of. I take full responsibility for my actions. I have apologized to my beautiful wife that I have known and loved since high schooI. I appreciate and am thankful for the love and understanding from my family, friends and supporters. Now it is time to put this behind us and move forward.
"
The Kings also provided a statement: "We're disappointed by Darren’s behavior, and today he accepted full responsibility for his actions. He is committed to using this incident to help raise awareness through education of this critical issue in the community."
On May 30, Collison was arrested and charged with domestic violence stemming from an incident with his wife, Keyosha Collison, who had visible injuries on her body when Placer County deputies responded to a late-night call, per Sam Amick of USA Today.
Darren Collison was charged with two misdemeanor domestic violence counts in June, including one count of domestic violence causing injury and one count of domestic battery of a spouse.
The 29-year-old has played the last two seasons for the Kings. He has also played for the Indiana Pacers, Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Clippers and New Orleans Hornets.
