Ellington's Injury Creates Multiple Voids for Niners

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee first reported the news. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network confirmed the roster move.
Ellington hasn't made much of an offensive impact since the 49ers selected him in the fourth round of the 2014 draft. He caught just 19 passes across his first two seasons.
His main contributions have come on special teams. The South Carolina product was projected as the team's kick and punt returner heading into the 2016 season before the injury setback.
San Francisco's front office has already moved to fill that void. The team acquired fellow wideout and returner Jeremy Kerley in a trade with the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Joe Fann of 49ers.com passed along comments from offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins about the deal.
"Jeremy gives us some depth as a slot receiver," Modkins said. "He also gives us some versatility as a returner, so he's added depth that we really need, and I think he'll be able to get caught up to speed fairly quickly."
Ellington had just returned from an ankle injury before tearing his hamstring. He's battled a variety of different health issues since arriving in San Francisco, missing a total of six games over his first two years. This is his first major injury, though.
Along with Kerley, DeAndrew White and Aaron Burbridge could also be in line for more looks with the offense leading into the regular season.
In addition, former Auburn special teams hero Chris Davis may challenge Kerley for return duties.
