WWE Raw: Burning Questions to Address After August 29 Show

Erik BeastonAug 30, 2016

Monday's Raw was rocked by a controversial finish to the Fatal 4-Way elimination match for the WWE Universal Championship, generating several questions concerning the bout around which the entire show was built.

In that match, Triple H returned from a months-long hiatus to deliver a thunderous Pedigree to Roman Reigns outside the ring, then stunned the wrestling world by turning on former protege Seth Rollins and assisting Kevin Owens in leaving with the newly created title.

With Stephanie McMahon and Mick Foley watching from ringside in stunned silence, unaware of The Game's intentions to interfere, there are more questions about the state of the Monday night staple than in recent memory.

1. What can fans expect from babyface Seth Rollins?

To say Seth Rollins has been greeted by an abundance of support from the WWE Universe since his return from injury would be an understatement. Some of the biggest, most positive reactions for any Superstar on the WWE roster come when his theme music hits and The Architect steps through the curtain.

After finding himself on the receiving end of the Pedigree Monday night, Rollins is poised to capitalize on the overwhelming support and become the babyface he has not been in WWE since The Shield's brief flirtation with babyface status.

What should fans expect, though?

Is this going to be a situation where he becomes the CrossFit version of John Cena, a super-athletic babyface whose popularity among fans wanes with every passing week of menial character development?

One can hope not, but the evidence is there to support that idea.

Roman Reigns lost his edge the moment he became the top babyface in WWE. Daniel Bryan and CM Punk both became caricatures of the men who struck a nerve with fans during their brief runs atop the company.

For all his immense skill and unmatched athleticism, Rollins does not have a character strong enough to survive toying by WWE Creative to make him a more marketable babyface. Unless management allows him to be the sympathetic and likable guy who fans had the opportunity to see on WWE24's episode "Seth Rollins: Rebuild, Redesign and Reclaim," the likelihood that he succeeds in his new role lessens significantly.

2. Is Kevin Owens the long-term answer as champion?

The easy answer is an emphatic "yes."

One must take creative direction into consideration, though, before answering so swiftly and definitively.

Right now, as joyous as fans should be over the decision to push Owens into that position, one must also realize that it was not him who stole the spotlight Monday night, but rather Triple H.

The Game was the central figure of the closing moments of the match, and thus what he does and how he explains his actions is as important as anything Owens does. Or so WWE Creative will dictate.

Owens is only the long-term answer if management can resist the urge to turn him into Rollins circa 2014. If he even remotely becomes the puppet that the former WWE champion did during his time on top, Owens will lose the elements that have made him one of wrestling's most engaging stars. More importantly, it will doom his title reign to mediocrity rather than the greatness that his performances have netted him over the last 12 months.

3. Does this mean we are getting Reigns vs. Triple H II?

Hopefully not.

Please.

Pretty please.

Do not punish the fanbase, WWE. We will be good. Maybe even pretend to kinda care about Darren Young vs. Titus O'Neil.

The feud between Triple H and Reigns did nothing to help the latter, and furthermore, 100,000 fans rejected it at WrestleMania, the largest indictment of a feud imaginable.

The last thing fans want is another two or three months of Triple H desperately trying to have that epic match with Reigns that he did not have in Dallas.

Cut all ties, end that feud and focus on the issues between the COO and Rollins, which will surely captivate fans more.
