Sergio Aguero has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association after he was found guilty of violent conduct following a clash with Winston Reid during Sunday's 3-1 victory over West Ham United.

The Argentina international appeared to elbow Reid in the face after backing into the Hammers defender, and the FA confirmed on Tuesday that the Manchester City striker had been charged and that he has until 6 p.m. on Wednesday to respond.

Referee Andre Marriner didn't punish Aguero at the time of the alleged offence, but the FA has decided to take retrospective action on the matter, which equates to an automatic suspension for manager Pep Guardiola's star if he doesn't contest the charge.

Former City and England winger Trevor Sinclair believed Aguero wasn't deserving of punishment for the incident, as the contact with Reid's face seemed to be quite minimal:

Manchester City now face the possibility of being without their South American superstar for the next three matches, the next of which is a much-anticipated Manchester derby against Manchester United on September 10.

Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison disagreed with Sinclair and felt the motion alone was sufficient for Aguero to receive punishment, irrespective of the amount of contact:

Guardiola will at least count his blessings the incident took place before the upcoming international break, meaning he'll potentially have one week more to get to grips with his new personnel in time for the derby clash at Old Trafford.

The Spanish tactician could opt to push summer signing Nolito into a more central position during Aguero's potential absence, or youngster Kelechi Iheanacho could be drafted in to fill the void.

The Citizens currently sit atop the Premier League standings after winning their first three games of the 2016-17 season, but that perch will now be in danger if they're without the talents of their talismanic frontman.
