WWE SummerSlam 2016 Results: Twitter Reacts to Top Stars, Moments and More

Erik BeastonAug 21, 2016

A Match of the Year candidate, a victorious return, ugly title belts, new champions and a controversial conclusion to SummerSlam 2016 dominated Twitter feeds Sunday night as one of WWE's marquee extravaganzas trended worldwide.

The show, sure to split the audience down the middle, was a four-hour marathon that satisfied some, angered others but left both sides with enough memorable moments to be wholly unforgettable.

These are just a few of the stars, matches and demolitions that had fans posting all night long.

A Scary Bump and New Champion

Sasha Banks and Charlotte continued the Women's Revolution Sunday night in grand fashion, delivering a tenacious and ferocious match that nearly ended before it could even begin, courtesy of a scary botch that left fans wondering about the health of The Boss.

Once it was apparent that the champion was ok, attention turned to the finish, which saw Charlotte unseat her rival to become a two-time WWE women's champion.

While some will understandably voice frustration with the outcome, it has always been more effective to have a babyface chase the heel champion. There is more money in that story and a greater likelihood that the fans get behind the hero.

It remains to be seen if that is the route WWE Creative takes, but it is at least an explanation for the rapid-fire title change.

Match of the Year

John Cena and AJ Styles followed up their near-classic at Money in the Bank and a six-man tag team match at Battleground with a five-star affair that stole the show midway through Sunday's broadcast.

Twitter, including Bleacher Report's Donald Wood and Total Wrestling Magazine, understandably erupted after Styles pinned Cena clean in the center of the ring, a rarity even 11 years into the franchise star's main event run.

Hall of Famer Jim Ross applauded the business decision by Cena and WWE.

The quality of the match was on the minds of Pro Wrestling Report's Dameon Nelson, B/R's Ryan Dilbert and Alexandra Irving and What Culture's Adam Pacitti, all of whom were fervent in their acclaim of the bout.

Finally, WrestlingInc.com hit fans with a dose of reality, revealing that when it comes to SummerSlam, Cena has a history of doing what is best for business.

After three straight pay-per-view contests in a row, Cena and Styles finally delivered the classic fans expected, and WWE rewarded fans with the outcome they have seen oh-so-rarely.

Welcome Back?

Nikki Bella returned to active competition Sunday night, the replacement for Eva Marie in the six-woman tag team match that pitted her, Natalya and Alexa Bliss against Becky Lynch, Naomi and Carmella.

B/R analysts, including Wood, Steven Rondina and Mike Chiari had differing opinions on the return of the longest-reigning Divas champion in WWE history.

Eva, whose arrival was teased by her narrator before it was revealed that she was vacationing in the British Isles after being emotionally distressed by her treatment by fans, thanked her Total Divas cast mate for filling in.

Bella scored the win for her team with a pin-fall over Carmella following a TKO, setting herself up for a push on the blue brand. Most likely, she will be paired with Becky Lynch. But which of the two takes precedence in the coming weeks and months?

It remains to be seen, even if The Lass Kicker was the first female selected by SmackDown Live in this past July's WWE draft.

Style Over Substance? Really?

The revelation of the WWE Universal Championship earned the wrath of fans, who completely ignored the match that was unfolding in the ring. Instead, they opted to focus their attention on the hideous new title, much to the detriment of both Seth Rollins and Finn Balor.

Noelle Foley and boyfriend Frank The Clown, in attendance for the show, both called out fans for their disrespect shown to the athletes.

Bleacher Report, The New Age Insiders and parody account WWE Creative Humor all poked fun at the design and the fans' reaction to it.

WWE Shop, eager to capitalize on the buzz, made sure to let fans know they can own a replica of the title immediately.

If that was not bad enough, attention turned to the gear worn by Balor and Rollins.

After a highly competitive match that ranked as one of the night's best, The Demon King dropkicked Rollins into oblivion and pinned him following The Coup de Grace.

Raw general manager Mick Foley, WWE Superstar Goldust, new NXT champion Shinsuke Nakamura and TNA Knockout Maria Kanellis were just a few of the competitors to congratulate the new champion.

In the end, what should have been a crowning achievement for Balor was marred by idiotic crowd chants and an attention to details not remotely associated with the tremendous effort of the men between the ropes.

TKO

Anyone expecting a suitably epic contest between Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton to cap off what was a bizarre night of action at SummerSlam was surely disappointed at the conclusion of the event's marquee bout.

After an intense match that saw Orton survive numerous suplexes to hit an RKO on The Beast, Lesnar busted The Viper open and the referee called for the bell. The decision struck a nerve with the Twitterverse.

Some reacted with humor, others were left stunned.

Still others, like B/R's Chiari, were okay with the conclusion of the bout.

The most important match of the night, on the second-most prestigious event of the year, ended with a glorified referee's decision for blood loss.

While it lent credibility to the world of pro wrestling and gave it the feel of a real fight, it left SummerSlam with an awkward conclusion and an air of uncertainty. The event should have wrapped up loose ends, rather than encouraging them.
