WWE SummerSlam 2016: Matches Sure to Cause Controversy Among Fans

Aaron BowerAug 12, 2016

WWE SummerSlam is never short of a controversial moment or two, and this year's blockbuster is expected to be no different.

The Aug. 21 spectacular will probably be the last time the two brands meet on the same show until Survivor Series, so it is imperative that the summer's biggest show goes off with a real bang.

And although the level of wrestling is bound to be the highest it has been in quite some time, controversial moments will help to make the show explode.

Here are three matches in particular where fans can expect to be frustrated, shocked or taken aback by controversy.

John Cena vs. AJ Styles

This will be the third and likely final meeting between AJ Styles and John Cena, and if WWE goes the way it has in the past with Cena's grudge matches, fans will be outraged.

There's no indication to say that Cena will go over Styles, but if The Phenomenal One comes out of this particular rivalry on the losing side, it will be another bad move from WWE.

WWE has to ensure that it has Styles going over cleanly in this instance. Cena's role should increasingly be one that allows future main event talent to get a push at his expense—and Styles is a guy who, despite being nearly as old as Cena, has a future in SmackDown's main event scene.

As of now, there is no stipulation attached to the match, and with The Club now drafted to Raw, it should leave fans with a solid one-on-one match to see who wins this intriguing dream rivalry.

The result is crucial for one man more than the other. Win, and Styles has a huge platform on which to build. Lose, and his stock will take a real tumble—and that will not impress WWE fans.

Roman Reigns vs. Rusev

Rusev has looked unbeatable of late, especially when defending the United States Championship.

Pitting him against Roman Reigns at SummerSlam is an intriguing move in many ways. First, it confirms that Reigns' stock has fallen following his suspension, but a move to the midcard may turn out to be what he needs to find his place in the company once again.

But it also strikes up fear that, given Reigns' heavy backing in the past, he will be allowed to go over Rusev and bring an end to one of the most dominant, impressive heel runs in quite some time.

A Reigns victory on his first attempt will cause controversy aplenty, as it will do nothing for The Bulgarian Brute.

He should be allowed to chalk up at least one victory in this feud before losing the belt. In fact, there's a fair argument to suggest that, with the work he's done in possession of the title so far, he doesn't deserve to lose it for quite some time.

Reigns vs. Rusev could be a captivating feud. If Reigns goes over straightaway, however, it will lose its appeal instantly. More crucially, it will spark up memories of Rusev's feud with John Cena a couple of years ago—and it's taken him this long to rebuild his career from that crushing rivalry.

Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins

Will there be a clean winner? Will The Club come down and help Balor? Or will Rollins prove to be the ultimate heel once again and sneak out a victory?

Whatever happens in this eagerly anticipated match, there is going to be some level of controversy involved in the eyes of WWE fans.

Having someone go over cleanly would, as strange as it sounds, be the most controversial ending of all. It would signify that, like Roman Reigns' clean losses to both Dean Ambrose and Balor within the span of 24 hours, someone else is going to be pushed.

And in truth, this is a rivalry that could run for quite some time if WWE plays its cards right. Having a controversial finish to allow one man to escape with the WWE Universal Championship makes much more sense in this instance—but even then, someone is bound to be unhappy.

What fans do know is that they can expect an incredible wrestling match—potentially one of the matches of the year if it is allowed to run.

But controversy and Rollins have gone hand-in-hand in recent years, so don't expect that to change at SummerSlam.
