Predicting Next Big Interbrand Feuds in WWE After Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton

Aaron BowerAug 12, 2016

WWE has already torn up the rules surrounding brand exclusivity, as Randy Orton and Brock Lesnar have both invaded Raw and SmackDown, respectively, in recent weeks—and it shouldn't end there.

One of the biggest positives in having a draft is that you can create a war within a war and have stars fight for the prestige of their brands and personal pride.

That's not to say WWE should immediately create a new pay-per-view like the old Bragging Rights shows, as a battle of the brands has to be done delicately.

It can't overshadow the WWE World Championship and WWE Universal Championship, as that would make those world titles feel secondary at the expense of an interbrand war. But here's the potential rivalries heading out of SummerSlam that could start to build the tension for the red and blue brands to compete for the prestige of being WWE's top show.

The Club vs. American Alpha

This first interbrand battle is based on the assumption that The Club will eventually win the WWE Tag Team Championships, and American Alpha will follow suit on the blue brand with SmackDown's version of the tag titles.

But when that happens, what better way to tease an all-out brand war than by having the heads of the tag divisions collide?

It doesn't—and shouldn't—have to be a unification battle because that would make little sense after SmackDown just brought in its own championships.

But what it does do is two key things. First, it establishes Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson as the main tag team on Raw—fans of The New Day may not like that, but The Club has every right to be considered Raw's flagship tag team.

Second, it gives American Alpha an almost instant push up the card. With no disrespect intended to the teams around them on the blue brand, Jason Jordan and Chad Gable already look to be going to a higher level than The Hype Bros, The Vaudevillains and The Ascension.

Having The Club invade SmackDown is a fantastic prospect, and it would also give Gallows and Anderson the authority to potentially ride roughshod over both of WWE's tag divisions. Then we would start to see them excel like they did in Japan.

Kevin Owens vs. Cesaro

Sure, Kevin Owens and Cesaro may both be on the same brand—but that doesn't mean one of them can't defect to raise the interbrand stakes even more.

WWE immediately lit the touchpaper for Cesaro to potentially switch brands on the night of the draft, when it had him cut a promo saying how he was disappointed to be going to Raw.

He's also shown similar frustration inside the ring, most recently venting his disgruntlement at Raw general manager Mick Foley for what he considered to be the false promise of a United States Championship shot, which he eventually got during Monday's main event.

So with frustration building and the potential for a segment where Daniel Bryan confronts him backstage at SummerSlam, let Cesaro decide he's had enough of Mondays, signing a contract to work for the blue brand.

This, however, infuriates Kevin Owens. After he's done with Chris Jericho, Enzo Amore and Big Cass—which shouldn't take that long—he decides to try to take down Cesaro for defecting from the company's main show.

Both men will need an intriguing and interesting feud in the latter part of 2016, so why not pit two massively over stars in an interbrand rivalry?

Finn Balor vs. Bray Wyatt

It's a match many WWE fans would pay good money to see—The Demon vs. The Eater of Worlds.

Again, this is based on the assumption that neither man captures his respective world title in the immediate future, but in reality, you could save this battle until the beginning of next year.

That would mean that we'd get a run to WrestleMania 33 that would see Finn Balor take on Bray Wyatt in a dream match.

The promo work would be exceptional. It would see both guys push each other to the limit and have them bring the best out of each other.

It would also give Balor a memorable feud for his first appearance at a WrestleMania pay-per-view. But how does it start? Potentially at the Royal Rumble in 2017.

There, Balor could be on a hot streak during the Royal Rumble match and look like the favorite to win and move on to the WrestleMania main event.

But then the lights drop, and Wyatt—who isn't scheduled to be in the match—appears and takes out Balor.

From there, WWE has all the makings of an incredible rivalry—one that would elevate the Raw vs. SmackDown battle.
