How to Increase Excitement for Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte at WWE SummerSlam 2016

Graham GSM MatthewsAug 9, 2016

Coming off arguably one of the greatest main roster women's matches in WWE history, Sasha Banks and Charlotte are set to go at it again at SummerSlam 2016 for the WWE Women's Championship.

Although fans are already anticipating their upcoming encounter, there are a number of ways WWE can increase excitement for the matchup in the weeks preceding the pay-per-view. And thankfully, plenty of time remains between now and the event.

Banks and Charlotte contested a critically acclaimed matchup on the July 25 edition of Raw, with Banks finally overcoming her adversary to capture her premiere WWE Women's title. Aside from a one-off outing on SmackDown earlier this year, that marked their initial one-on-one meeting on the main roster.

However, they are far from strangers to one another, having previously done battle during their time spent in NXT. Not only were they allies at one point as part of the BFFs, they also went to war over the NXT Women's Championship on countless occasions.

That said, Banks and Charlotte have quite the chemistry together and would thrive in whatever type of contest they collided in. A stipulation match between the two would be an excellent addition to what should be a stacked card.

It is only inevitable that the women headline a pay-per-view in WWE, and SummerSlam would be the right time to do it. Unfortunately, it is fairly unlikely given how star-studded of a show the August extravaganza will be this year, but that doesn't mean they can't be positioned prominently on the card.

Sure, the Triple Threat Elimination Tag Team match that occurred at last year's installment happened toward the end of the evening, but it was merely meant to serve as filler following John Cena vs. Seth Rollins.

That should not be the case this year with the women, and while SummerSlam will feature its fair share of marquee matches, few will be bigger than Banks vs. Charlotte II. Their latest match against each other was so stellar that the pressure will be on for them to top themselves this time around.

It is entirely possible they do that in a standard singles match, but the best way for them to raise the bar at the biggest party of the summer is to add a stipulation to the matchup. Of course, it isn't often women's matches are given gimmicks (Bra and Panties nonsense notwithstanding), and Banks and Charlotte are the perfect opponents to do it.

Lest we forget, Lita and Victoria once faced off in a Steel Cage match on Raw, but that was well over a decade over. Women's wrestling is in a far better place now than it has ever been before, so SummerSlam would be an appropriate stage for the lovely ladies to make history.

From a storyline standpoint, throwing a steel cage into the mix would make logical sense. Dana Brooke has been a thorn in Sasha's side, and had she stuck around ringside for their championship clash, Charlotte likely would have retained the title with her help.

The steel structure would prevent Brooke from interfering and allow Charlotte and Banks to produce another gem of a match without any outside shenanigans. Not to mention, it would have a strong chance of stealing the show.

If a Steel Cage match isn't in the cards, a Last Woman Standing match would be equally entertaining. TNA's Gail Kim and Taryn Terrell broke barriers with their Last Knockout Standing affair in 2013, and Charlotte and Banks could follow in their footsteps.

As Banks and Bayley proved with their Iron Man match last October at NXT TakeOver, respect that the women are fully capable of competing in gimmick matches and making them meaningful. Such a match may not be in the cards for SummerSlam, but a stipulation of some sort would be welcomed all the same.

Either way, Banks vs. Charlotte II would greatly benefit from an additional stipulation or something else being up for grabs (i.e a Loser Leaves Raw match, etc). It should be a sensational match regardless, but that extra incentive would ensure it is an instant classic.
