WWE SummerSlam 2016: Best Potential Feuds for Kevin Owens, Bray Wyatt and More
The WWE SummerSlam 2016 card is filling up in a hurry, leaving Superstars like Kevin Owens and Bray Wyatt still in search of opponents.
Not everyone on the roster is going to make the cut, but it's hard to imagine WWE going forward with its second-biggest pay-per-view of the year minus potential megastars like Owens and Wyatt. As deserving as those men are of prominent places on the SummerSlam card, space is growing increasingly limited.
On Tuesday's SmackDown, Apollo Crews earned a shot at The Miz's Intercontinental Championship. That same night, John Cena challenged AJ Styles to a sequel of their Money in the Bank stunner. Roman Reigns looks poised to take on Rusev.
That leaves few top names left to tangle with. It's going to take some creative, outside-the-box thinking to find spots for Owens, Wyatt and other wrestlers still awaiting SummerSlam matches.
The following is a look at WWE's best remaining options and what feuds would lead to the highest-quality matches, tell the best stories and create the biggest opportunities. In some cases, these rivalries build on pre-existing animosity. Other feuds would just provide excuses to get talented guys on the card.
Cesaro vs. Sami Zayn
1 of 4Cesaro is fresh off besting Sheamus on Monday's Raw, a win that earned him a future title shot. Sami Zayn is one pay-per-view removed from the match of his life, an emotional, enthralling victory over Kevin Owens at Battleground.
For WWE not to insert either man into the mix at SummerSlam would be a waste of momentum.
Yes, Cesaro and Sheamus barked at each other after their match on Monday night, but that is better off leading to a side story rather than a main plot. Fans just saw those two feud in 2014, and Sheamus has been ice-cold since The League of Nations disbanded.
A babyface vs. babyface battle between two stars on the rise would be a fresher, more exciting choice.
Cesaro and Zayn are guaranteed to have a show-stealer of a match. Their 2-out-of-3 Falls bout at NXT three years ago established that brand as must-watch.
Plus, there is a bit of backstory to build on here. They clashed earlier this year in multiman matches as both tried to seize the Intercontinental Championship from The Miz. WWE could also present this showdown as each man's chance to put his imprint on the New Era, a contest to decide which popular in-ring Picasso is closer to heading to the top tier.
Bray Wyatt vs. Rhyno
2 of 4Bray Wyatt showed on Tuesday night that he's angry and frustrated with his position. He pounced on Dolph Ziggler, hoping to take his spot in the WWE World Championship match.
WWE has to dive further into that rage. Wyatt is best served playing a frothing, unchained beast. And pitting him against the returning Rhyno is an apt way to show that he is exactly that.
When Rhyno showed up at NXT in 2015, his battle with fellow powerhouse Baron Corbin was billed as a meeting of two unstoppable forces. Corbin prevailed by outlasting Rhyno in a slugfest.
A similar story featuring Wyatt instead of The Lone Wolf would be a smart move. The bout would be better with the more explosive and compelling Wyatt facing off against Rhyno.
This rivalry would both give Rhyno something promising to do upon his arrival and afford Wyatt a chance to score a significant win.
SummerSlam will have plenty of finesse and acrobatics thanks to Finn Balor facing Seth Rollins and Apollo Crews taking on The Miz. The card would benefit from adding a hoss fight to the equation.
SmackDown Women's Division
3 of 4The Raw women's division's contribution to SummerSlam will be the meeting of two longtime rivals, Sasha Banks and Charlotte. Without that kind of history and chemistry on its side, SmackDown should go in a much different direction.
Becky Lynch has seemingly already moved on from Natalya. At this point, there's not enough fire left in that feud to be SummerSlam-worthy.
SmackDown has a lot of new pieces to put to use. A handful of recent arrivals, including Eva Marie, Alexa Bliss and Carmella, are now part of the show. Naomi recently returned after being out of action for months, her momentum suffering as a result.
This is often a situation where WWE pairs up two squads of women and has them go at it in meaningless tag team action. A chase for gold would be the better move this time around.
Daniel Bryan said on the Bear Hug it Out podcast that SmackDown will have its own women's title in due time. Why not introduce that belt before SummerSlam and let the pay-per-view host the crowning of the first champ?
Until then, SmackDown would see all of its women jockey for position. WWE can turn up the volume on Carmella and Natalya's personal issues during this time. Bliss can go on a winning streak. A Beat the Clock Challenge can determine which two women meet at SummerSlam, with the victor taking home the new SmackDown women's title.
Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho vs. Enzo Amore and Big Cass
4 of 4WWE has already planted the seeds for this clash of loud personalities.
Kevin Owens provided commentary during Chris Jericho's match against Enzo Amore and Sasha Banks. The bruiser took plenty of shots at Amore. He then told Jericho after the bout that he has his back.
Rolling with this narrative and putting together a tag match pitting Amore and Big Cass against the two heels would be smart business.
The feud has ample potential thanks to all the characters involved. As Busted Open radio tweeted, "The promos alone would be gold."
This likely isn't what Owens had in mind for himself at SummerSlam months ago, but it's the best realistic option left on the table. There's not an open spot in the Universal Championship picture. Finn Balor, Seth Rollins and Brock Lesnar are all already booked for SummerSlam.
Besides, Owens and Amore will make this more entertaining and memorable than the everyday midcard fare that it appears to be.
