PGA Championship 2016: Predictions, Live Stream and TV Coverage Hub for Saturday

Stuart NewmanJul 30, 2016

The weekend of this year’s PGA Championship is all set to be one of the most exciting in history, as golf’s biggest names battle it our for the iconic Wanamaker Trophy at Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey.

American duo Jimmy Walker and Robert Streb currently head a congested leaderboard on nine under par, but they’ll be nervously looking over their shoulders at the talented chasing pack.

Open champion Henrik Stenson is just three shots adrift at six under, while defending champion Jason Day is a shot closer to the summit at seven under alongside surprise package Emiliano Grillo. Martin Kaymer, Patrick Reed and Brooks Koepka are lurking ominously at five under.

Despite the overwhelming pressure of leading a major championship, 37-year-old Walker remained calm and collected when he started Friday’s play at five under.

The American picked up from where he left off on Day 1 with two birdies on the front nine taking him to seven under. He then went on a birdie surge from holes 12 to 14, with a monster putt on 13 really catching the eye, via PGA Tour:

And although a bogey on the last prevented Walker from holding the outright lead going into Saturday, he finds himself in a very strong position and told Doug Ferguson of Associated Press (via PGA Tour) that he’s looking forward to the weekend:

"It's going to be a new experience, and it will be fun. You still have to go perform. Doesn't matter what tournament it is.”

Walker has looked unshakable tee to green so far and has threatened to pull clear of the field at times, and if he keeps that up we could see another first-time major champion crowned in 2016.

Streb will also be hoping for a maiden win, and he did his chances the world of good with an incredible performance on Friday.

The 29-year-old carded a remarkable seven-under 63 to tie the major championship round record, with a birdie on his final hole of the day taking him level with Walker, via PGA Tour:

Streb hasn’t been in fantastic form of late, with his last PGA Tour top 10 coming way back at last year’s PGA Championship, but his ball striking on Friday will give him plenty of encouragement heading into the weekend.

The 29-year-old's score does show that Baltusrol can be tamed, and it’s certainly possible for a player to come out of nowhere and surge to the top of the leaderboard.

World No. 1 Day proved that in Round 2, as he went on a scintillating run of seven birdies in eight holes to jump from flirting with the cut line to fighting for the title.

The Aussie came into his PGA Championship title defence complaining of illness, but as Jason Sobel of ESPN revealed, he’s not using it as an excuse:

Day and Stenson will be many people’s favourites at Baltusrol this weekend, and for good reason, too.

Stenson has quietly gone about his business this week and still finds himself just three off the lead, while Day is more than capable of smashing course records and winning under pressure.

Either way, such is the congestion on the leaderboard that it’s difficult to pick a winner at the halfway stage.

Walker and Streb are playing excellent golf so far, but many will expect their respective chances to crumble as the tournament heats up.

Day, Stenson and Kaymer have been here and done it all before, and that extra experience could prove crucial come the 18th green on Sunday.

Prediction: Henrik Stenson and Jason Day to be the final Sunday pairing
