Jordan Spieth at PGA Championship 2016: Friday Leaderboard Score and Reaction

Mike ChiariJul 29, 2016

Jordan Spieth made his move Friday at the 2016 PGA Championship, as the world's No. 3 player posted a three-under 67 in the second round to enter the clubhouse in a tie for seventh place at three under overall.

Following an even-par 70 in the first round, Spieth settled in at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey, and he put himself in position to contend over the weekend. Here is a look at the leaderboard as things currently stand:

Spieth posted five birdies and just two bogeys en route to his impressive score, as seen in the following rundown of his second-round scorecard:

The two-time major champion carded 15 pars in the first round, but it was apparent early Friday that his second round would have a far different feel.

Spieth started his day on the back nine and immediately birdied the par-four 10th before following that up with a second birdie on the 11th.

He initially seemed destined for disaster on his second hole of the day after his drive found the fairway bunker, but he made up for it with a spectacular approach, as seen in this video, courtesy of PGA.com:

Spieth gave a stroke back by slipping up and bogeying the par-three 12th due to some uncharacteristically poor putting, but it didn't take him long to get back on track.

The 23-year-old superstar made his third birdie putt in four holes on the 13th thanks to more heroics out of the bunker:

Spieth then closed out his sparkling first-nine performance on the Baltusrol back nine by birdying both the 17th and 18th holes, with the following putt serving as the exclamation point to a spectacular start:

PGA.com provided a compilation of Spieth's wide array of highlights from an opening nine that yielded a score of four-under:

After marking down several circles on his scorecard to start his day, Spieth's second nine more closely resembled his first-round performance.

He parred his next six holes after the birdie on No. 18 before running into some trouble on the par-four seventh.

While Spieth was largely excellent Friday, he struggled off the tee, often finding the rough or fairway bunkers, which forced him to scramble from there.

That was the case on No. 7, as his first shot ended up in a puddle on a cart path following a rainy morning that caused some delays.

As seen in this Vine, that created some issues for Spieth, as it was difficult to complete a proper drop on such an awkward surface:

Considering the situation he was in, Spieth did well to strike the ball solidly and give himself a chance to potentially save par:

After a two-putt, however, Spieth had to settle for his second bogey of the day, which dropped him into a tie for eighth at three under at the time.

Also, despite having a rules official with him the entire time, there were questions regarding whether Spieth took complete relief on his drop and subsequent shot, which left him susceptible to a potential penalty stroke.

Spieth had a great chance to get that stroke back on the ensuing hole, but his birdie putt went begging, and he settled for a par.

The same was true on No. 9, as his birdie putt had too much pace and rimmed around the cup, forcing him to tap in for another par and finish his round at three under.

A good round could have been great for Spieth, if not for the miscue on No. 7 and narrow birdie misses on the eighth and the ninth, but he still managed to put himself in a great position entering the weekend.

According to ESPN.com's Jason Sobel, Spieth has an opportunity to accomplish something that hasn't happened in eight years, should he win the tournament:

After melting down and losing at the Masters despite holding a sizable lead, Spieth struggled to 37th- and 30th-place finishes at the U.S. Open and British Open, respectively.

The Dallas native finished inside the top four at all four majors in 2015, and he has a golden opportunity to return to that form at Baltusrol.

Although Spieth still has plenty of work to do, if he can clean up his driving and turn in two more rounds that are otherwise similar to what he did Friday, he figures to be in the hunt for his first career PGA Championship title.
