Rob BlanchetteJul 27, 2016

Bundesliga contenders Borussia Dortmund take on Manchester City in the International Champions Cup on Thursday, with the eyes of the football world on new Sky Blues coach Pep Guardiola as he prepares the English team ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.

The friendly match takes place at the Shenzhen Universiade Center, Shenzhen, China, after City's prestigious run out against Manchester United was called off at the 11th hour at Beijing's Bird's Nest (National Stadium) due to a poor playing surface, according to Jamie Jackson of the Guardian.

BVB recently appeared in very good shape when the beat United in Shanghai in the ICC, destroying the Red Devils 4-2 because of their superior fitness due to an early start in pre-season activities.

BVB Offer Tough Challenge for Guardiola

BEIJING, CHINA - JULY 24: Manchester City's manager Pep Guardiola gestures during the pre-game training ahead of the 2016 International Champions Cup match between Manchester City and Manchester United at Olympic Sports Center Stadium on July 24, 2016 in

City will be hoping to accumulate minutes under their belts on Thursday after missing out on fitness opportunities against United on their tour of China.

Dortmund appear in tremendous shape ahead of the new German season, and two goals from former Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Gonzalo Castro saw them recently beat the Sky Blues' most bitter enemy.

Prolific hitman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also found the back of the net against Jose Mourinho's outfit, continuing his irrepressible form from last season.

The Gabon international was one of Europe's top strikers last term, scoring 33 goals in only 41 appearances in the Bundesliga and UEFA Europa League, according to WhoScored.com.

Here is the player in action for his club:

Guardiola is in the process of expanding his squad during pre-season and hopes to add Germany prodigy Leroy Sane and young South American forwards Gabriel Jesus and Marlos Moreno, according to the Guardian's Jackson. The deals could see City burst through the £100 million barrier on transfers before the start of the Premier League after the high-profile additions of former Dortmund star Ilkay Gundogan and Spain international Nolito.

John Stones of Everton is also on City's transfer radar as Guardiola looks to revamp his defence, per Jackson.

Guardiola has also held interest in Aubameyang, but the attacker recently admitted he will only leave the Westfalenstadion for Real Madrid, dealing City a huge blow, according to German TV station ZDF (h/t Joe Short of the Express.)

"Only Real Madrid would be able to get me out of Borussia Dortmund," Aubameyang said. "That's the reality, but right now there's nothing at all."

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola speaks as Fernandinho listens during a press conference after a training session a day before the 2016 International Champions Cup football match between Manchester City and Manchester United, in Beijing on July 24, 201

City have taken their first steps toward building a dynasty at Eastlands after tempting Guardiola to leave Bayern Munich, but it is too early to assess his squad as he attempts to garner playing time for his troops.

The match against United was an opportunity to acquire the early bragging rights over Mourinho, but BVB will offer stiffer opposition than the Red Devils at this stage of preparations.

BVB are much improved in the past 12 months and, despite losing Gundogan and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to the north-west powerhouses, they will be a difficult challenge for any opponent in 2016-17.
